How many more ridiculous pro-religion movies do we need?

Here we have another movie with someone who became an atheist because of some trauma who finds their faith again when confronted with supernatural phenomena. This is getting old. Why won't Hollywood make any movies where a religious person discovers that their mythology of choice is bogus? People always talk about Hollywood being anti-religion liberals, yet all we see are pro-religion and pro-Christian movies. If conservatives are right, where are the pro-atheism and anti-Christian movies? Even the DaVinci Code movie didn't deny that Jesus lived or was god. It merely suggested that there was more to the Jesus story than is found in the gospels. I'm getting tired of seeing all these ridiculous "atheist re-discovers faith" movies. I definitely will not be seeing this one.

i am an outspoken atheist, and know a few other atheists like myself. NONE of us came to atheism because of a traumatic event on our lives that made us loose our faith. i was born in a catholic familiy and gradually gave up the whole faith and religion thing as i became aware that in every other area of knowledge, evidence and reason are supposed to be fundamental when choosing whether to believe if something is real or not. with age it became obvious to me that giving religious belief a "special treatment" was just nonsensical and intelectually dishonest.

just so you people know, in order to make the movie more realistic the makers consulted a real life paranormal debunker. unlike the character in the movie, this person has never encountered any paranormal claim that stood up to close scientific and rational inspection.

How did all these dumb atheists end up at this movie in the first place. Did they go straight to the theatre from under their rock?

reply

It's funny that you should suggest that atheist are close-minded and uninformed whilst the reality is the exact opposite (look up any study/meta-study and you'll see).

We are all atheist in some religions. Some of us just happens to be atheist in one extra religion. Generalizing that particular, vast diverse group of people and calling them dumb, is in effect proving that the only stupid, close-minded and intolerant person is YOU.

I'm saying they're dumb for seeing this movie and not realizing it would be related to God based off the preview or the title.

On the other hand....this movie heavily twists the Christian faith...wouldn't the fact that churches DON'T complain about movies like this, Stigmata, Constantine, The Omen, and hundreds of others...mean that Christians are being more tolerant of films than athiests?

Really, I know of people foolishly using faith to justify violence and things like that. Including Christians. That bothers me. However, this movie doesn't promote being narrow-minded and using religion as a destructive outlet. Let people believe what they want, as long as they aren't being destructive. This movie didn't promote religion as an excuse for violence or anything. The character questioned her belief until it was proven to her that it existed in the STORY. What is wrong with that??

Atheists hate conversion. It makes them cry at night.

Actually, rather than criticize individual films like atheists do, Christians tend to attack the entire movie industry.

This movie is about drawing the viewer in, accepting a particular worldview (in the case, that atheism is correct) and then proceeds to annoy the viewer by "proving" that atheism is false by using special effects, and a bad plot.

The implication is that if you're an atheist, you're probably missing a town full of child-murdering Satanists who are trying to produce the anti-christ, and you'll probably end up carrying the beast yourself, bringing ruin to the whole world. It's pretty hard not to be offended by that. Because we all know this isn't just a movie. People really believe this.

Suppose the character started out Christian, but converted to Wicca upon seeing proof (that we also see in the film) that Wicca is correct and Christianity is not. Would you be defending it?

Also, I don't know how you can use Constantine and The Omen as examples of atheist films. They are both pro-Christian propaganda.

Stories are stories, tell me a decent story and you've got me hooked, so I don't mind pro-religion stories at all...or any other type of story, for that matter. However, being an atheist and an anti-theist, all these God stories keep reminding me of Ra in STARGATE, which makes me want to watch STARGATE yet one more time.

Don't pass up decent movies just because of the subject matter. You don't have to buy into the concept. Just enjoy the show.

I don't see this as a pro-religion movie.

I wasn't religious before. I watched it. I feel the same about religion as I did before. If anything I view it as the opposite. It shows religious zealots to be nuts.

So then don't watch it. No one is going to force you, right?

It's a strange phenomenon, isn't it? There are millions of movies out there, catering to every possible demographic, and people go see the ones that p*ss them off? What's up with that?

Watch Silent Hill.
I could say the same as you, except the opposite. I'm getting sick of all these anti-religious movies. Sure, this was a cult, but it's still bashing religious people, people who "blindly" put their faith in a god.

If you want to see a movie where the main character kills God, go see The Golden Compass. If you want to see an anti-Conservative movie, go see anything. Especially Mona Lisa's Smile.
Even Chocolat was FULL of anti-conservative and anti-religious themes.

You know what?

Religion is a major part of human culture and is very important to lots of people. Yes, there's going to be movies focused around it. Get the hell over it.

The funny thing is, you judged the movie before even seeing it. It's like, any movie that takes place in a universe where Christianity is true, is somehow pro-Christian. If that's your attitude, you need to stop being such a prissy little twat.
