Illusionist copied Prestige?

Did the Illusionist copied Prestige? or vice versa?

both films came out almost the same time.

reply

I think the only thing these movies have in common are the time they came out and have magicians.
The Prestige is a dark tale about obsession, revenge, rivalry, sacrifice. It has a built similarly to a magic trick with a clear with a pledge, a return and of course: a Prestige.
And well,
The Illusionist in the end is a cheesy movie about an "impossible" love. The main character being an illusionist doesn't really add up to the actual story apart from so it seems adding plotholes about how the main character got away.

Hardly likely. As poster CurzonStreet pointed out in detail, each film relied on a different story source - and then there's the issue of timing.
First, the short story on which The Illusionist was based was published in 1990, while the novel on which The Prestige was based was published in 1995.
Second, The Illusionist release was at a film festival in April 2006, whereas The Prestige release occurred at a different film festival in October of that same year.
