Salma Hayek's Acting

I know everybody keeps saying she's miscast which I agree but besides the looks I think she was horrible in this movie. I usually think she's a decent actress and I like her but in this movie I couldn't stand her. She was so irritating. And I was surprised how many people loved her in this movie. I don't blame everything on her though the script was pretty bad. Does anybody else feel this way.

I thought she was great. She always the sweet beautiful woman (except in From Dusk til Dawn). I thought she was very convincing as a deranged woman. She was pretty scary. It was pretty cool to see her in a different character.

reply

She did an excellent job in this. She was completely wacko.

I'm sorry man but I totally disagree with u, hayek's performance is the only thing that bring this movie to life and i just couldn't help but think that is such a shame she doesn't get more roles where she can actually show her acting skills. She's so good in this movie that she's scary and the performance is memorable!!

reply

I thought she was really good, but Leto was better.

I was very impressed with her in this movie. I think she is a very talented actress.

It is always amazing to see how opinions can vary. I cannot believe anyone would
criticize Salma Hayek's acting in this film. It is the best thing she has ever
done-- perhaps I should say that I have seen.

The only problem is that they had a male with a Spanish surname and then they
cast Salma, a Mexican-born actress of Arab-descent to play someone named Martha Beck. Was the actual Martha Beck Hispanic? Her name would not indicate it, although I know many Hispanics who happen to have non-Hispanic names. There is
one scene where she refers to going to Spain, but that is just some line she is feeding a victim. I just find it odd that the filmmakers did not address this in some fashion.

I thought the movie worked pretty well, but Travolta was just playing one note all the way through. Leto had the most interesting character, but Salma made the movie worth seeing.

I am of Hispanic descent so I'm not being racist. I agree with Voacor, a name like Martha Beck is assumed to be played by someone without a hispanic accent, unless otherwise explained. I think Salma is great in movies where she plays a latin character but however she doesn't seems to be able to talk without a spanish accent. She should have a good dialog coach because this is not the only movie where she has had this problem. She was convincing as a psychopath but the accent kept distracting me.

Her English is just terrible, that's all. So anything she does or says while speaking English is not convincing at all. That's why it seems like she's a bad actress.

Don't mistake me - she does know and understand English, obviously. But you'll see that in her films where she speaks Spanish, she is much more believable and fluid. To take it a step further from what another poster said about her being miscast in this film. She is miscast in any film where she has to speak English.

murali---Totally agree with you!

The reason it's impossible to forget it's Selma Hayeck in the role isn't because people are so prejudiced they can't get over a latina actress playing a non-latina character. The reason is because Hayeck refuses to put down the red lipstick and tight clothing and immerse herself in the role. She was good in Frida - which she produced - but that's the only movie I've ever seen her in where I really forgot who I was watching onscreen.

Salma was horribly miscast in this ovie and I'm not sure if that is the reason I didn't like it. She was very distracting in her overacting and her accent. The woman can't act but I hear she can sing!

reply

Yeah. Her English marked with her Spanish intonation makes for awful acting. I have never been a fan. Although, I will say when she turned psycho that was the first time I actually saw some depth to any character she's ever played.

reply

I think she was excellent but I agree the accent was distracting, spanish actresses like her and penelope cruz are usually great in spanish movies and bad in english movies, like for example take how great penelope cruz was in volver and how bad she was in every english movie she is in

I thought she was really good, but Leto was better.

Agreed. I'm not really a fan of Hayek, but she was frighteningly evil here. Probably one of her best roles, but even then she was outshone by Leto. Leto was awesome.

Both were way better than the leads. I thought Travolta and Gandolfini actually kinda dragged the movie down. Both are good actors, but seemed very bland here. Laura Dern too. Her character actually didn't need to be in the film at all.

For the record, the real Martha Beck was an overweight white woman, think Kathy Bates in Misery. I'll leave my opinion to myself...there are enough of them floating around here to cover every angle.

miscast? you bet, martha in real life was fully twice selma's weight and that is the only thing wrong with this movie, why did'nt she get padded up or a real fat actress get the part?.she was just too lovely. a truly neglected film if ever there was one.apparently it went straight to dvd curious

I thought she was the best thing about this movie
