At Super Bowl XVI against the San Francisco 49ers, Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver David Verser decided that he was going to play in the game, despite having a torn thumb ligament and despite being in pain. While the decision was admirable, it backfired in spectacular fashion, with Verser not only partially costing his team the game, but having the worst performance by any returner in the history of the Super Bowl.
