Initial D vs Tokyo Drift

Ok, we've seen them both, which is better? I'm gonna go with Initial D on this one. I'm not talking about plot/storyline, just racing. When I first saw/heard the 86, it was an amazing sight, of course, I'm partial, after reading most of the Manga, and seeing the TV show :)

Also, FnFTD gave Initial D props, even if it was the wrong one (something about racing for the "1986" Toyota)

My biggest impression is that Tokyo Drift is Americans trying to do a Japanese anime, and Initial D are Hong Kong directors trying to do a Japanese Anime. They show their own prejudices and assumptions.

Tokyo drift was shiny with bright lights and an oversimplifed Romance angle.
Guy: Hey Baby!
Other Guy: That's my Girl!
Guy: Let's Race.

It had some cool special effects and an American who learned one trick and suddenly was the best.

The Chinese Initial D was heavy on the physical comic relief ( people puking, drunk dad) and the acting was a bit telegraphed as is the style.[ Note Takumi's hand waving around as Natsuki kisses him. ]

Initial D, however, was way better than Tokyo drift because it kept the important things from the manga. The cars. It was a rush to see the real cars from the manga, and when Takumi's headlights come over that hill and shine into the other car's rear view mirror you just want to cheer.

Both movies had flashy editing, and the Tokyo Drift certainly had the larger budget, but the CG car effects in the Initial D movie reminded me of the anime and I liked that.

I have to say that I wasn't impressed by the music for either of them though. Nothing like the Initial D anime. Everything was too slow.I want my Europop!

What both of these productions lacked was subtlety. I felt that if a Japanese director had done it, there would be less flash bang and pratt falls, and more about people who love what they do and want to be better.

I liked Initial D much better than Tokyo Drift...sure Tokyo Drift had most of the bells and whistles, but Initial D just captured the feeling of Drifting perfectly...some of the situations in Tokyo Drift were kinda unrealistic...case in point the last scene with Dom (Vin Diesel's character from the original Fast And The Furious) driving a muscle car and challenging the new DK.

They taped over your mouth
Scribbled out the truth with their lies
Your little spies

Of course Initial D is much more better than Tokyo Drift. It has great racing scenes, and it's a better film than Tokyo Drift. I give Initial D 7/10, and Tokyo Drift 3/10.

I was going to say both stories suck equally when i saw the topic. Well at least there were cool cars and some crashes in tokyo drift. Initial D has nothing.

i preferred initial d better. it is simpler (not stupider) and doesnt contain a completely outrageous plot. tokyo drift flashier but i think initial d just had a better storyline and seemed MUCH more realistic. i should mention that i havent read the manga or watched the anime

i just watched the movie again after watching the anime series. now i think that initial d seems really sloppy
