Are all video store clerks morons?

Or is it just the ones that work at Family Video? Before anyone gets angry with my statements realize that they were a joke. However, the clerks at my local Family Video are most assuredly morons and do not deserve to work in a store where they are required to recommend films to customers. The manager of the store noticed I was renting this movie and proceeded to laugh at me and then told me she felt sorry for me because I was renting this atrocious film (she didn't use that particular word, I believe it may have been outside of her vocabulary). This seemed rather absurd since every review I have read said Behind the Mask is the breath of fresh air American horror needs and after viewing I have to agree.

This was by far the most creative horror film I have seen coming out of the United States in a long time. It's just sad that when people go to that particular store and ask for advice on movies they have to deal with individuals who cannot appreciate original and imaginative films.

I'm going to go with Family Video clerks are idiots. The ones in every Family Video in my area seem to only watch the crappy flavor of the week movies and are clueless when it comes to classics and good horror.

One time this chick who worked at the place I was renting at recommended The Hills- oops I mean The HillZ (with Paris Hilton) to us. I rented it because the chick was hot...but seriously she told me it was a good movie which makes THAT video store clerk a moron.

put on the mask and dance for daddy

First off. *beep* you. secondly. she sounds liek the typical type-a morons we get asking "whats the best horror film?" "whats a good film?" "whats the funniest film you have?" every *beep* day in blockbuster. the sooner people realise that people have different TASTES in movies the sooner retards will stop posting crap like this.

Clearly you don't have great taste in movies.

I take no offense to that. I worked for Movie Gallery and the location I was at closed (low revenue, people bolted when the new manager came in, as they remember her from the other store and left that one when she came in too) and I didn't catch this when it first came in. I thought it looked idiotic. Didn't recommend it, but didn't bash it since I never saw it. But, when I finally did break down and watch it, I whole heartedly regretted not viewing it sooner. It is a great film and quickly became a recomendation for the next two days the store was open haha. Talk about perfectly timed, huh?

I used to work at Blockbuster and nearly everyone employee there hated movies. They hated watching them and could give advice or whatever to customers. It was wierd.

Well...

It WAS Family Video...

And for the most part, their employees can't tell the difference between Shrek and Gumby...

Just sayin'...

I think it depends on what store you go to--if you go to a big "chain" store like Blockbuster, what you'll mostly get is retail employees who don't get paid enough to care about anything except doing enough to not get fired. If you go to a small, independent store that specializes in imports, you'll get people who have very strong opinions, but who may not share the same taste as you. Myself, I love movies and would love to work in a movie store, but with a degree and no retail experience, I can't actually get a job in one!! Ha! Instead, I just get involved in long conversations with the clerks in video stores, and I usually give THEM recommendations!

And, for the record, Daniel Waters (who wrote Heathers) also worked in a video store! :) As did Kevin Smith...

As for this movie being "original..." Well, it was creatively packaged, but it's nothing your average film student wouldn't be able to recite word for word. It was the recognition that I enjoyed, and how tongue-in-cheek it was. In fact, I saw the "twist" coming a mile away, and was a little disappointed when it deteriorated into your normal slasher film. Great coming out of the gate, but limped into the last ten minutes. Oh well, no one's perfect.

I work at Family Video, and I recommend this movie to just about everyone that comes in. I do work with a lot of idiots, though, that have never heard of Scorcese or the Coen brothers, or make fun of me for renting foreign movies. It is just a job for them. You have to understand, we also have a lot of idiots that shop there...for example, I've been asked what the best Jaws movie was, and what the sequel to Bad Boys is called. But I digress...

I am trying to bring the love of cinema back to video stores (or famvid anyways) I always recommend movies like this, Oldboy, Fargo, Dr. Strangelove, etc. Movies that "common folk" might not normally see or be exposed to. I work in a hick town, so most of the time, they disregard my recommendations, and it gets really frustrating.

Black Christmas is the worst. People should stick to the originals. I love gory movies, but updating a movie with gore that was not originally usually fails. I purchases Behind The Mask sight unseen and thought it was awesome. This was a smart movie about all the bad movies we have seen. It was as if Christopher Guest did a horror film.
