What kind of father wakes their kids up to tell them their mother died?

Maybe it's just me, but if my kids were in bed asleep and I found out their father died (or mother if I was a man), I would just go ahead and let them sleep and tell them in the morning. There's no point in waking them up in the middle of the night and saying "Hey kids, your mom's dead. Go back to sleep now".

Funny attitude. I think it's pretty clear in the movie that his mistake/callousness lay in not telling them sooner. When she had had an accident and there still might be time to contact her, he 'let them sleep', and I think we're meant to think he was wrong to do so.

Most people delivery this kind of news immediately. Although for practical purposes you're right and there's no advantage in it, it's simply what most people do. Hell, I've been woken up in the dead of night to be informed of the birth of a child. Telling me in the morning would be fine, but people get a sense of urgency in delivering news of a life-changing nature.

I don't think it was an action of error. He did not want to worry the boys until more was info was provided. I am also sure that Charles knew she wasn't in a condition to talk was she was in surgery by the time they were informed. Diana was speaking for some time after the accident, but she had been sedated to keep her from refusing medical intervention as she was pulling out her Iv tube.

I don't think it was to make him look bad at all. He didn't want to worry them before they knew more and he was about to leave himself to see her. If I recall correctly, I'm real life he didn't tell them until they woke up the next day. Th Queen mother was also not present and and was not told until she woke up in manner of a letter The Queen sent her. At the point that they found out she was in surgery and despite the fact that Diana was speaking when medics were on the scene she was sedated as she kept refusing medical attention by pulling her Iv tubes out. So telling them any early would have been pointless to inform them any sooner. You are talking children not adults, I highly doubt someone would phone a child at three in the morning to tell them a baby was born.
