Wretched

I saw this movie at Sundance in 2005. It's one of the worst films I've ever seen.

Thanks

I like it quite a bit.

i like it, too. and i don't usually go near "romantic comedies" (although, it's an 'indie,' so it's far from a conventional romantic comedy).
it always cracks me up when people take time outta their day to bash/abuse/lambast or otherwise caterwaul against a movie on a message board. just strikes me as a uniquely (and aggressively) negative thing to do...
and the one or two times i've done it, i cracked me up, too :-)

Thanks, Greg.... I'm watching it now.... with an open mind. I appreciate anyone who uses the word "caterwaul", let alone, knows what it means! And you are so right...

Have a good one! BB

This is a well-trodden, even hackneyed, theme: Someone, usually a woman, is blocked from having her own life and finding happiness because of responsibility for a dependent family member. If you're going to use this plot, you need more than a bunch of "quirky" and "eccentric" characters. Try to say something new about it. And make sure the dependent one is genuinely in need. (The Laura Linney subplot in "Love, Actually," for example.)

Here, Ludlow is just a scumbag who leeches off his sister ... because he can. He's impossible to like or feel sympathy for, and not funny enough to watch anyway. And did anyone ever doubt that Reggie and Myra would end up together? So what's the point?

reply

Wasn't Ludlow depicted as having some mental issues?

reply

That was never clear. He was mostly just a weirdo who *could* have behaved differently if he had wanted to -- but it was easier, or maybe more fun, to have his sister take care of him.

Just revisited my post -- couple years old now.

Kincaid said it better than I did.

reply

No it is not wretched. It was well acted.

It's fine if someone doesn't like a film, but give a reason.

"Here, Ludlow is just a scumbag [...] He's impossible to like"

Are you actually stupid enough to think the writer, director, and actor intended to portray the Ludlow character as "likeable"? The entire point was that Myra was willing to basically sacrifice her life for him even though he was a piece of shit. Yes, she was an enabler to him. That's life for some people, jackhole.
