borrrrrrring miike rip off*SPOILER*

I found it extremely boring and felt like it ripped off a few of Miike's films.

#1 it is the plot from Audition slow moving suspense, with a weird chick. Audition is a masterpiece of suspense this is just boring and much slower with no shock. Only creepy *beep* was the stupid white leotarded blueman group guys.

#2 Cameraman theme really felt like Visitor Q especially considering the daugher element. (also a masterpiece and a great watch)

#3 Psychotic break and *beep* video effects really resemble MPD Psycho. (which I hated)

--------------------- On a side note...
#4 Its basically little shop of horror except not funny, no song and dance and has a hot asian underground vampire instead of venus fly trap and the CGI body builder guy from Ichi the killer instead of rick moranus.

Such a waste of time and a rental. However the only bad Tartan dvd I have seen so far. Miike is one of the most if not the most infuential director of the past 15 years he gets ripped off alot... I just get the feeling that this film really tried to be a Miike film. Haven't seen juhon or whatever it is yet so I guess I dont know his style and cant comment on it fully but it must be better than this piece of trash. Really could of been a masters of horror or 3 extremes rather than full length feature could of easily cut 45 minutes from this film.

Any other Miike fans feel this way?

No, I'm a big Miike fan but I think you are talking rubbish.

reply

Wow this is the response.... well if you have seen the films you will know what im talking about then you really shouln't reply. It was intended to be a topic starter for people who may agree or disagree not just flame someone.

I don't think your criticism is going anywhere. WHen you compared Marebito to other films you say "It's completely like that film except xy and xy and xy, and, oh, that's different as well, yeah, but all things considered, it's still a rip off". Marebito has a different tone, and although I agree it kind of resembles the atmosphere of some Miike films, it has to be said that this creepy kind of film is a typically Japanese thing and not something only Takashi Miike has done. Even the most obvious examples such as Hideo Nakata's and Kyoshi Kurosawa's films resemble Marebito to a greater extent than the Takashi Miike films you have mentioned.

Audition is about/ one of the things Audition is about is the madness of a character that is important to the main character we identify with, while Marebito is about the madness of the main character. The "camera metaphor" underlines the fact that his view of the world is an extremely distorted one, the film could almost be seen as stream-of-consciousness.

Visitor Q is about families in Japan and, in that sense, it doesn't try to describe the fate of individuals but rather criticises Japanese society. Marebito, although I do feel that it has a socio-critical commentary to offer, has a much more individualistic take on its character - see stream-of-consciousness.

Blablabla, anyway I rated the film 9, I accept the fact that you don't like it but I don't think it's a bad film at all.

Honestly, the first thing that popped in my head when he learned what F ate was Little Shop of Horrors. He even discovered it in a similar way. I kept expecting F to start spouting off "feed me Seymour!"

But, that aside, I did think it was a good movie. A nice little trip into the mind of someone insane.

Lol...me too. I thought to myself how this better NOT turn into a musical.

Anyways, overall the movie was ok. Seeing that the movie sorta floated around the terms terror and terrified, I anticipated what to come. But, I guess I had too high of expectations. Honestly, in the very last scene, if anything I thought F gave the most comforting, adorable smile...

Just because it's a slow-moving suspense movie with a "weird chick," that makes it a rip-off of Audition...? You're really reaching here. By that logic, Star Wars is a rip-off of Star Trek because they both take place in space, Unforgiven is a rip-off of A Fistful of Dollars because they're both westerns with Clint Eastwood, Heat is a rip-off of The Godfather Part II because they're both crime movies starring De Niro and Pacino, Blade is a rip-off of The Lost Boys because they both feature vampires in the modern day, Kiss of the Dragon is a rip-off of Enter the Dragon because they both feature Chinese martial artists and they both have the word "dragon" in the title... and do you see how just about every single movie is a blatent rip-off when you simplify its plot as much as you have? Marebito and Audition don't even come CLOSE to having the same plot.

#2 Cameraman theme really felt like Visitor Q especially considering the daugher element. (also a masterpiece and a great watch)

Yes, because the cameraman theme has NEVER been used before Visitor Q... Videodrome anyone?

#3 Psychotic break and *beep* video effects really resemble MPD Psycho. (which I hated)

Again, Videodrome?

#4 Its basically little shop of horror except not funny, no song and dance and has a hot asian underground vampire instead of venus fly trap and the CGI body builder guy from Ichi the killer instead of rick moranus.

Obviously you don't know much about cinema, either American or Japanese. If you did, you would know that The Little Shop of Horrors was originally a low-budget B-grade horror film directed by Roger Corman and featuring a young Jack Nicholson. The musical spoof didn't come along until much later. And if you knew anything about Japanese cinema, you would know that "the CGI body builder guy from Ichi the Killer" is actually Shinya Tsukamoto, one of the most accomplished Japanese filmmakers, responsible for the work of art called Tetsuo: The Iron Man.

Ha yeah dude I def agree. This movie was really bad. And Audition was a masterpiece! I find Cure to also be one of the best movies I've seen.

reply

eeehhhh...not sure if I'd really call Tetsuo Iron Man a work of art, but I agree Marebito was good.

I am the master...and the commander!

Maybe not Tetsuo, but certainly Tokyo Fist, Bullet Ballet, Gemini, A Snake of June and Vital are some of the most impressive films of the last 20 years.

Also, this film is much closer in tone to Tsukamoto's work as a director than anything by Miike.

Have you only watched like one J-horror movie? Audition and Marebito have two COMPLETELY different plots! Not to mention the slow moving pace that you are saying is bad is a major part of the spook factor in asian cinema.

A scary movie doesn't always consist of GORE! SEX! MORE GORE! GUNS! MORE SEX! EXPLOSIONS!
seriously geeze...

I though Marebito was good, especially on account of how long Shimizu Takashi did it in.

#1 Not at all. The two movies have about the same pacing, but the resemblance stops there. Audition is a somewhat simple (but great) thriller about love and madness, Marebito is an art movie about terror and obsession.

#2 Not at all. Visitor Q uses the camera theme to criticize reality shows and the media in general, Marebito uses it as a metaphor for reality or lack thereof.

#3. Partly, but that is hardly a rip-off. The video effects are low budget in both movies, and while Shimizu might draw inspiration from Miike here, he's not copying any scenes, themes nor ideas from him.

Your points are far fetched. Miike is a director making films of dark humour whereas Marebito had close to no humour at all. If it bares resemblance to any director or film, it has already been pointed out that it would be Cronenberg and Videodrome, but I'd still not call it a rip-off of anything I've seen.
