The original poster has it spot on! It was ridiculously unrealistic...
To be honest this movie was utter *beep* and i cannot believe its 7.1!
I actually laughed at the end when a shotgun shot went through the car, though the back seat and then through the passengers seat into Bale..what a joke

I agree with the "he helped support her through college" thing. I don't recall if they exactly called out their history in the movie, but I did get the impression that they had a long history together, going way back before they were in their current situations.

I know somebody who he and his wife are both in their 30's, and they have been together since high school. Very rare, but things like that do happen.

I would not have found it believable at all if they had recently met and gotten together. But thinking that maybe they have a history going back over half their lives, I could believe it.

can't believe I'm overanalyzing a movie like this but this is probably on the bottom shelf of what was unrealistic. What was so bad about Rodriguez's character besides being short? Because they got together when he had a job and she didn't, so there couldn't be much. She even said she wished she could "party like back then" or something so she wasn't exactly slumming it. People do get past physical flaws in real relationships if you didn't know, it's shallow thinking like this that makes them crumble

besides, Tom Cruise is short and he was probably born in a galaxy far far away but he could bag 9 out of 10 earthling women or even gay men with high standards of attraction

I was complaining how a laughable actor like Rodriguez could date someone as hot as Eva, if you bothered to read my post you would know that.

The whole scene when they enter the bar (sell the pistol) is so unrealistic, from that point the movie was over for me. Notice How Rodriguez is trying to look bad (he fails completly)... pay close attention to the guys watching him in the background. In reality they would have jumped him.

BTW I could care less if she's hot or not.. If I want to watch beatiful girls I rather watch porno....

She's been on TV, yo... She's looking for movie vehicles to step up to. You think she's going to be a Bond girl or in some Merril Streep part? TV people take what they can get at first and move up if they can. Movies are usually always a step up for TV people. Some TV people never make it in the movies like Tom Selleck. They been type cast and just can't make the transfer. They're lucky to get Lifetime movies. Plus how many parts are out there for hispanic women? Not a huge amount. I thought Freddy Rodriquez was an okay partner for her, they're both tiny people, haa. She's not all that glam.

From a red, white, and blue blooded American woman, Freddy Rodriguez is actually pretty good looking. OK, he is short, so I don't really know about the "getting jumped" part, but he is pretty cute and physically matches up with Eva pretty well. Besides, Al Pacino is 5'7" and pretty ugly and he seems to bag a decent amout of babes in his movies.

No, you never “said” he was ugly, but you gave the implication. Asking people if someone like Sylvia (I’ll use the character’s names to avoid confusion) would date a “midget” looking like Mike gives the impression that you think Freddy is ugly. If that’s how you feel, that’s fine, as that’s your opinion that you’re completely entitled to. But if you reread the thread you’ll see a few other people felt you were referring to his looks as well. Own it. Don’t try to act like you meant something else now.

Well, your “Life experience” is pretty sheltered. Like others have mentioned, it’s not so unrealistic that Sylvia would be dating Mike. Others here have listed reasons why. Let me elaborate for you:

Mike and Sylvia have been together for 12 years. He supported her while she went through college, which indicates he has the capability to stay focused enough to work for long periods of time and responsible enough to pay bills. For whatever reason, Mike loses focus and it takes him a while to get back on track. From Sylvia’s point of view, Jim exacerbates the situation, which is why she can’t stand him.

If Sylvia met Mike a week ago, I'd agree with you. She wouldn’t give him the time of day. But she’s been with him a long time, loves him, and she’s unfortunately one of the many women who should leave their men when he can’t get his act together, but wastes a lot of years HOPING he’ll grow up. Unfortuante? Yes. Unrealistic? No.

Mike was with Silvia for twelve years. That's long before she was ever in law school, and probably long before regular college. Obviously she used to run the streets with him and Jim, but she's cleaned up her act. That's why Jim calls her a "sellout" when she doesn't want to let Mike go to Mexico with him. It's not unreasonable to think that Mike could've pulled a girl like Silvia, especially if she didn't look the way she did twelve years before, when she didn't wear suits and all of that make-up and have her hair impeccably done 24/7.

As for the shotgun shell going through the taillight, through the frame of the car, through the backseat, and then through the front seat into Jim--well, if you pay attention to the scene, it isn't a shotgun being used. Considering the weapon the old man was using, it's entirely possible for Jim to have gotten hit in the torso, and certainly in the head, by the bullets.

i'm not a big freddy rodriguez fan by any means (he was awful in Grindhouse: Planet Terror and Havoc) but it is refreshing to see a girl who is attracted to guys despite looks, height, weight etc.

freddie was good, and i dont know about him gettin jumped, freddie and my bro are the same build and my brother is one of the hardest dudes i know. so height got nothing to do with it, not to mention ppl know other ppls reps...even if they wanted to stomp him they know jim got his back and they wouldn't want to deal with him. so im calling bs on him gettin jumped for "tryin to look hard" and who gives a 5hit about how "hot" his lady is compared to him. i know tons of dudes that are goons and still manage to pull in 8s 9s and 10s. u got game u got game. looks mean d1ck.

i disagree, in the real world it aint all movie star matchings!

bone heads get together with hotties and vice versa

you would be suprised at the guys these hotties get with, real meat heads with more brawn that brains - they must like that whole neanderthal thing.

also roddy jr wasnt that bad, at least he had some morals and put an end to bales wooden overacting
