I've been wondering since I saw this movie today, are those real cigarettes that they use or are they some kind of fake smoking object?

In Mad Men most of the cast use 'herbal cigarettes' which have no nicotine or other addictive ingredients, maybe they used these or something similar as they were smoking so much..

i read about the pipe tobacco in the trivia section.

i don't understand why a non-smoker would substitute normal tobacco for pipe tobacco in a cigarette.

i would have thought pipe tobacco would be harsher.

can anybody educate me?

It can be harsher, but more natural (pure), meaning it doesn't include the thousands of sh!t components regular cigarettes have.

I know this thread is old, but you're not actually allowed to smoke real cigarettes on closed sets (or anywhere else indoors for that matter) any more in most states. The actors are smoking "Clove" or herbal cigarettes.

"You want me? Well f*king come on and break the door down. I'm ready...I'm ready..."

I was under the impression that if it was done for artistic purposes then it was allowed. e.g a theatre play of Churchill would allow the actor to smoke cigars inside.

Although I may be wrong...

No. He's right. In an effort to maintain the artistic integrity of the work, smoking is allowed. Moreover, performance art, such as comedians on stage, are also allowed to smoke during their acts. It's under the guise of being a part of the act.

If it's illegal to portray Ed Murrow smoking a cigarette, by the actor actually smoking a cigarette, then the law's an ass!

...A portrayal, under any definition, is an artificial interpretation of reality, in other words, a fake! So my vote goes to the fake fags. Time some folk got a grip on reality, get rid of the death adder cigs and live! Stop movie makers taking money from companies to promote a dying habit.

How are they promoting a habit by having it in a film? That's the most preposterous statement I have ever heard. By that definition nothing that is illegal should ever be portrayed in a film because it would be "promoting it". Sheesh, some people.

I knew a guy who smoked clove cigarettes. They smelled like a fetid fart mixed with sweaty socks, burning. Much worse than tobacco, which I also hate the smell of, but I would have preferred it to cloves.
