and by the way, any true Wes Anderson fan knows The Life Aquatic is on such a higher level above the others. It is by far the greatest Anderson film. I'll be surprised if he ever makes a film that will surpass it. I hope so, but it's a high hope...

I mean, c'mon, how can we IGNORE those two films? The Life Aquatic is probably the most brilliant screenplay ever written--a film about a doco about a sea explorer seeking revenge while figuring out life: it's just ridiculously original. and jeff goldblum is in it and he is amazing. I love when he just hits the dog with the newspaper.

I will say that Fantastic Mr Fox is Anderson's number one trademark film. it has AUTEUR written all over it in every shot.

His best is a toss-up between Rushmore and Fox; after that it falls squarely to Tenenbaums. Limited is actually close to being a bad film. Aquatic isn't bad, it just had the poor luck of coming out in the wake of the excellence Tenenbaums' excellence. That's a hard act to follow up. I strongly suspect that less than enthusiastic feelings towards it have a lot to do with the fact that as good as it is it just couldn't live up to the expectations inherently placed upon it by Tenenbaums' success and quality.

Even so, Aquatic is good but not particularly memorable; Murray's performance really centers the whole thing but it's leaden in places and unfocused in others.

All that said,

1. Fantastic Mr. Fox
2. Bottle Rocket
3. Royal Tenenbaums
4. Bottle Rocket
5. Life Aquatic
6. Darjeeling Limited

1. and 2. can just interchange with each other. I'm really on the fence. Rushmore is fantastic but Fox just feels like the film Anderson has been looking to make throughout his entire career. Everything about it fits his aesthetic and truly benefits from his propensities as a director.

huge wes fan & totally agree. the story in zissou is less plot-driven than his other works (which is strange to say considering most, if not all of his films are so character driven), but it is no fault; rather it serves the aesthetic of the film as much as the aesthetic serves it. that's the brilliance of it for me. and speaking of aesthetics, wes made a huge stride with zissou. it is the only film of his so far that i feel like he built on & strengthened his characteristic style. the worst curse for any artist is stagnation... and i think that's what happened with darjeeling: he took a step back. when he gets back to live action, i hope he continues down the road he embrked on with zissou

I agree man, Life Aquatic is poetry, and Wes Anderson's masterpiece. Of course most people consider it to be The Tenembaus, but how can you top:

Alistair Hennessey: Is this my espresso machine? Wh-what is-h-how did you get my espresso machine?
Bill Ubell: Well... uh... we f&#kin' stole it, man.

Had Jack Bauer been a Spartan, the movie would be called "1"
