Yes! Oh god, yes! I LOVE it when the government makes our difficult decisions for us! Why anyone would want to make up their own mind is beyond me- especially when there are people so willing to control our lives for us.

In Sweden smoking has been banned in restaurants for years. Kinda nice actually, now they're talking about banning it in the outdoor seatings aswell, but i think that's overkill.

Slave: Pharao Bender it hurts when i breath!
Bender: Then what do you think you should stop doing?

reply

When they start banning things that are completely against the logic and reasons for the original ban, you have to wonder exactly how insane those advocating it are.

The bans were to "protect people from (and further commas) "second-hand smoke" inside buildings".

Ok, so that's done.

Why exactly are they trying to ban smoking OUTSIDE a restaurant, in the open, where smoke is dissipating less than you breath in while in traffic?

And now in public parks.

reply

The nanny-state at it's finest.

Banned in restaurants and bars in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bermuda, Brazil, most of Canada, parts of China, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Iceland, India, Israel, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Paraguay, all the UK including England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, too. There are many more, I just got tires of listing them all.

Oh and did business die, fail, or decrease because of all those smokers not being allowed their vice? Nope, in fact the vast majority of countries found that after implementing a smoking ban, sales went up.

And as far and you smokers view it as somebody stepping in and playing nanny to you, non-smokers view it as a deterrent of thoughtless, selfish smokers imposing their drug habit on everybody within breathing distance of them.

Oh yeah, banned here in Louisville, KY home of some of the biggest tobacco industries.

Time to face the facts, smoking is finally viewed as a drug habit and the general public has grown weary of it. Smoking is viewed as a weakness and is socially passe'.

"Smoking is viewed as a weakness and is socially passe'."

For weak willed sheeps who follow whatever trend the media/society sets, yea.

LOL moomooking. Right on target.

This is evidence that it would happen naturally without government oppression. Business cannot survive catering to a shrinking market (video rental stores, anyone?). Restaurants were already going non-smoking voluntarily because it was good for business. Bars were creating a niche market by going non-smoking as well. It was evolving with society.

Suddenly, the ban gets implemented and their niche market disappears. How many non-smoking establishments were hurt by the smoking ban? Aside from nine smoking bars that closed, I know three bars here in my city that were non-smoking that went belly-up after the ban because their specialized atmosphere was no longer special...and the other bars in the area that survived the ban saw their numbers go up. It's not rocket science.

Essentially, Government killed businesses that would have survived and evolved on their own, destroying the income and investments of honest, hardworking Americans.

And following the trail of money, the bans are implemented to cater to insurance companies to save money on smoking-related health problems. Another example of destroying small business in favor of big business.

Absolutely. When one business fails because their customers no longer come in, that means more customers for the others who were able to survive longer. Try looking at the roster of bars and restaurants who went under within a year of implementing a smoking ban. Naturally, other restaurants will see an increase in business.
Eventually, we ALL adapt to oppression.

And as far and you smokers view it as somebody stepping in and playing nanny to you, non-smokers view it as a deterrent of thoughtless, selfish smokers imposing their drug habit on everybody within breathing distance of them.

It's actually playing nanny to NON-smokers. It's playing oppressor to business owners.
It's easier to move your lazy non-smoking butt than it is to move a business. Freedom isn't about doing what you like. Freedom is about not oppressing those who do what you don't like.
Just like smoking restaurants, I've been known to walk out of restaurants that have customers who wear too much perfume. I'm not about push banning perfume in restaurants regardless of how detrimental it is to my health and happiness. No. I go elsewhere. Freedom to drown your body in Brut aftershave is your right. I respect that.
It's frightening that people would favor oppression over freedom- and see it as a good thing.

the crime was hiding the truth. we know the truth now and we pay it dearly...how much of that money goes to displace the cost of healthcare?...almost none....the taxes collected on cigarettes should be spent on caring for our weak asses when we start dieing...why should everyone else pay for our mistakes in life?...we did this to ourselves..

reply

Crime? No, the idiocy was in taking the research of the companies at face value. I'm not about to accept the health research funded by McDonald's regarding their Big Mac any more than I would accept at face value RJ Reynolds' funded health research of their products.

It's curiously appropriate that the Nazis ran the first anti-smoking campaign.

gabby bm,

Included in your 6/14/10 rant was the following...

It's easier to move your lazy non-smoking butt than it is to move a business. Freedom isn't about doing what you like. Freedom is about not oppressing those who do what you don't like.

I have a rant of my own...

Cigarette smoke is the residue of your pleasure.

It pollutes the air, contaminates my hair, and dirties my clothes, not to mention what it does to my lungs.

This takes place without my consent.

I have a pleasure also. I like beer now and again. The residue from my pleasure is urine.

Would you be annoyed if I stood on a chair, without your consent, and pissed on your head?

Thank you for your understanding!

reply

Um, if I see you stand up on your chair, unzip your fly and point your weapon in my direction, I would most certainly move. I just don't like the smell of urine on my clothes (which is also why I don't sit down in bus stop shelters, on bathroom floors or public doorways)

I would also not patronize a restaurant or bar that would allow their patrons to do that. Now, people DO urinate in public places. I choose not to go near people while they are enjoying a nice relaxing piss.

But there ARE those people that don't mind it and in fact, pay hookers good money to do that very thing. If you want to run a bar that allows the patrons to piss everywhere and on each other, go ahead. I simply choose to not patronize such an establishment.

It's that easy. That's called freedom.

Interesting, a local bar around here stated they had a decrease in customers. 120- 20.

I, personally, don't care if smoking is banned in bars as I don't go to them. I just want it banned in places like Dennys where I'm going to be eating and don't have to smell it.
I'm also tried of it being advertised to children. And I wish it was the tobacco companies who went belly up.

PS why should we move? Smoke travels, it doesn't sit in one location.

Yep. That's usually how it works. Then that business goes belly-up and the neighboring business that has survived just gained 20 customers. "Business is up after the smoking ban!"

I, personally, don't care if smoking is banned in bars as I don't go to them. I just want it banned in places like Dennys where I'm going to be eating and don't have to smell it.

That is part of the problem. Most restaurants were making that move anyway. Those that did and were rewarded with more customers and higher revenue- and were then rewarded with poverty by the smoking ban.
No one who values freedom should ever support chains- no matter how good it feels.

I'm also tried of it being advertised to children. And I wish it was the tobacco companies who went belly up.

I'm more concerned about candy cereals and crap-foods being advertised to children. Kids are hard pressed to be able to buy cigarettes. But any kid with a couple dollars can by a box of Cocoa Puffs and a package of Twinkies. And unlike cigarettes, those things taste great the minute they put it in their mouth.

And don't worry about the tobacco companies. They'll be taxed out of existence in the United States by 2030 (just a guess). But they'll still be selling them overseas to Asian minors.
But by diversifying their corporate holdings, cigarettes can stick around for quite a while, regardless of sales. All they have to do is increase the cost of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese or whatever the hell subsidiary companies they own.

Is it right to force the proprietor to change his or her way of business because someone like you doesn't like the environment that the business offers?

I don't mind if proprietors cave to the pressures of customers and society. I just object to the angry mob enlisting OUR government to fast-track their agenda.

Actually, when the smoking was banned on Germany a year ago, so many businesses bankrupted, that the law was changed. In the Netherlands, smoking is allowed in every single pub and restaurant in the big cities after 11 pm and in Cyprus smoking was never officially banned. :)

reply

Actually, yes. Especially in Britain and in Australia.

Next time do some research, dumbass.

The problem is not that they're somehow trampling on 'freedom' - the problem is that instead of letting those morons confine their insane body-destroying and air-polluting vice INSIDE of these drinkers' paradises, now they are OUTSIDE, polluting everyone ELSE's breathing air, so the situation is horrible for non-smokers that JUST WANT TO BREATHE that are forced to walk by these groups of 'mom didn't breastfeed me enough so I have to keep sucking SOMETHING'-type weaklings, and kill their lungs, whether they want to or not.

THAT is the problem.. that now non-smokers are forced to breathe the poison smoke that was neatly confined indoors previously. Someone didn't think this through.
