The first movie in a LONG time that I turned off

Seriously embarrassing movie for Steve Carell- I couldn't even watch it!

100% agree. I wish I had hit the stop button, but I unfortunately kept thinking that it had to get better. I was wrong. So, so wrong.

These types of movies stress me out. The logical stretch is beyond reason and at some point a sane person would put a stop to the cascading madness. Meet the parents was another one of these movies. There are several others but none that stick out like these two. They become so aggravating to watch that you cannot see any humor in them whatsoever.

reply

For what it's worth, I thought the first hour was near awful but that last 20 minutes were great. People need to stop making movies over 90 minutes just because. I probably should have turned it off as well, but for whatever reason I didn't.

reply

Because of your post I will MAKE myself finish it and ONLY because I paid to see this heap of manure. I sure hope I agree with you.

reply

The worst movie he made since "Evan Almighty"...

reply

I turned off during the brunch scene when he was proposing. Just awful.

reply

I turned it off during the brunch scene too! I came back the next day and finished it though. Like someone else said the last 20-30 min are actually decent. It's just too bad the whole movie wasn't like that.

reply

Yeah, I couldn't get past the brunch scene either, turned it off and never looked back

reply

That was the funniest scene in the movie.

People are seriously retarded.

I actually had to turn it off at around the brunch scene too. I kept thinking that bad *beep* kept happening to Paul Rudd's character and it just wasn't going to get any better. But then the next day I turned it on again and watched the rest. The Tower of Dreamers scene couldn't have come soon enough, let's just put it that way.

reply

I liked the scene where one of the schmucks is in telepathic communication with the soul of the lobster being served for dinner.

reply

I thought the funniest bit of the movie was when the eagle flew out of the dinner, and the dead animal communicator woman earnestly said:

"Don't worry, it's not his time yet!" LOL

Aside from that, it was too long and not that funny, and I am a dude who likes lame comedies.

This movie was just plain awful, unfunny & I was seriously dying of boredom. After an hour my missus and I had had enough of it.

Even when we saw the trailer a while back we knew this film would be a piece of sh*te & I'm glad we didn't pay $13 to see this at the cinemas (though I still want my two bucks back I paid at the video store to hire it!!)

Paul Rudd should not be allowed to ever carry (or co-carry a film) again. He's gotten worse with each of his last three major flicks:

Role Models - He was doing fine until that god awful singing at the end of the movie (to Elizabeth Banks' character)

I Love You, Man - Jason Segel was great, Paul Rudd just got more annoying as the movie went on... Though it should come as no surprise that his character didn't have any male friends right? That part at least made sense.

And now Dinner For Schmucks - His character is not that different to the one in "I Love You, Man". He's ready to marry his girlfriend, he brings in an outsider who finds ways to screw up his relationship etc

The only movie that was almost as bad as this that I've seen in the past 12 months was Grown Ups. That movie however, I unfortunately paid to go & see at the movies...

There's people on here saying that the final twenty minutes was the funniest part.. I'm sorry, but if a film can't grab the viewer's attention (or laughs) in the first half hour then it's just not worth viewing anymore.

"Jason Segel was great" - in comparison to Paul Rudd in DFS he was, but I guess that's not really saying much?? lol
He's good in a movie called "Slackers" - now that's a funny film!!

I turned it off when that crazed lunatic Darla smashed the car windows. Wretched excuse for a movie, can't believe it actually got made.

Schmuck update: So after reading that they had the actual dinner toward the end, I buckled up and watched the rest. Equally pathetic, that whole deal with the award but there was one funny line: when Rudd's character said he'd take the award because he was the biggest idiot and Carell whined, "I won it fair and square!" or something to that effect. Very funny. Still giving it a one, though.

I tried to return this rental to the store but took the wrong movie. Got home, watched the rest for some reason and surprisingly the last 30 minutes is great! From 1:20 until the end.

reply

I watched the full film and man was this movie AWFUL!!! This dragged and dragged, I think I chuckled maybe once. Complete waste of time. 1/10

Look at the night sky, where does it end?

I agree with the overall premise.

This movie wasn't watchable until the last 20 minutes. It dragged way too long. Apparently the things happening to Paul Rudd in the movie were suppose to be funny, but I thought it was just cruel and made me cringe. I hated Barry and Darla.

Jemaine Clement was the only one who didn't get on my nerves in this movie. His character along with the dinner scene made me not walk out on this.

How do you and the other complainers explain the fact that Roger Ebert gave this movie 3 out of 4 stars?

reply

bryan you're not serious are you? His reviews are for sale have been for over a decade...

Lol at all of u....u have to watch this movie for what it is and understand the movie is not meant to be taken seriously.....awesome movie

My husband and I just watched this movie on HBO. He lasted until Darla was chasing Barry all around Tim's million dollar condo (seriously?... on his "analyst" salary?). I, on the other hand.. stayed with this horrible movie to the bitter end. I'm sorry to say that the main problem with this movie was... Steve Carell. His character was so beyond annoying, that nothing he did, or said, made me laugh.

The first 30 minutes of the movie had potential... the dog-eat-dog environment at the office... the set-up for the dinner with the pretentiously obnoxious upper management... the visit to the art exhibit to introduce the girl friend and the artist... those were all good scenes! My husband even thought that Tim was going to take the artist (well-played by Jemaine Clement in a role that was the highlight of the movie) to the dinner as his "idiot". Now that idea actually had potential.

But then they introduced Carell's character... and all the energy was completely sucked out of this movie. The movie then switched from the originally funny premise (the dinner)... to a "buddy" movie with two mishmashed characters (think Planes, Trains and Automobiles) Unfortunately... Paul Rudd and Steve Carell are not in the same league as John Candy and Steve Martin.

The movie did pick up a little when they FINALLY got to the dinner. But by then... it was too late to salvage. It's too bad, because I actually really like Steve Carell... but this character was all wrong for him. And the movie just meandered too far away from the dinner premise. And Paul Rudd's character was annoying too... especially in the way that he responded to Tim's character. But I would totally like to see more of Jemaine Clement... he was awesome.

Holy Crap, I'm in the middle of this thing and I am pretending to be in the bathroom right now. The beautiful Idiot I'm watching it with likes it and has it on pause for me right now.

Steve Carrell isn't the only problem here, but he is the biggest. I can't believe I have to watch the rest of this thing.

P.s. If you read this concentrate on beautiful.

reply

Badly written, boring. Serious waste of the actors involved.

reply

Further evidence that Steve Carrell's acting career should be over
I don't "hate" him ok, but seeing him trying to be funny on screen is just beyond painful and getting moreso with each movie. No actor makes me want to switch off a movie more than him, except maybe Adam Sandler.
