Saw This Movie- It's Horrible

I saw this movie at Toronto and it is simply horrible. The guy portraying the Arab Cab Driver is your typical cliche devout Muslim. I've never seen anything more stereotypical in my life. Pure, unwatchable garbage.

Coming soon to a Blockbuster near you!

I saw it at the Toronto International Film Festival too and completely disagree. It's far from horrible, and in fact is quite intelligent and thought-provoking. But I understand how some will object to a Muslim being portrayed sympathetically.

BTW, I suspect the director Jeff Stanzler is Jewish. Would it be better if he were totally anti-Muslim and therefore a "stereotypical" Jew?

It's a very interesting movie for those with open minds. Otherwise, as the title says, "Sorry, Haters."

That arab cab driver scene was actually filmed around the corner from my house. I was standing there watching them film it.

I am a Muslim myself and frankly the only stereotype that I can see is from this movie is the way Muslims attires are portrayed. It is optional that Muslim men keep beards or any forms of facial hairs. It's merely a symbol that you're a Muslim male. Another thing is about the "kopia", ie the cap that the cab-driver was wearing. I mean in this modern day and age, wearing a kopia is optional though it is prudent to wear it during prayers for grooming purposes. I suppose Americans see Muslims as purely Arabs and the Arabic culture hence the images that are portrayed in terms of our dressings and such.

Sometimes, I feel that our names are smeared because of those idiot terrorists. They are the very rotten apples in our bunch. *beep*

I live in NYC, and many Muslim cab drivers wear religious garb. I don't see that as a stereotyping any more than portraying a jew wearing a yarmulke...

I just saw the film today and I found it to be a very unsubtle ugly (BLECH! Video Transfer) cheap knock off of Michael Haneke's THE PIANO TEACHER.

reply

How you managed to connect any similarity with 'The Piano Teacher" and "Sorry - Haters" amazes me. Ah I get it - they are both movies about disturbed obsessive women ....well done. Maybe you should have a look at "3 Faces of Eve" - "Basic Instinct"....etc...oh or start in the 1930"s.

aml04057... did you leave after the first 3 minutes? you must not have finished viewing the film... it's rather obvious throughout the ENTIRE film, and specifically in the final minute or two, that presenting Ashade as a cliche was the only way for numerous pivotal plot points to have developed

But what does it say about a movie that has to base it's plot points on a cliched/stereotypical portrayal of a person?

reply

well, ok then but my only wish is that I dun want ppl to think that Muslims who wear traditional Islamic attire to be seen as outdated...hey, lots of Muslims especially in Singapore (where I am) are really really modern and yet we're still devout Muslims...Islam is all about tuning ourselves according to the times but still keeping true to the spirit of Islam and our doctrines such as the Quran and Hadith. It's those stupid terrorists who are the outdated and the ones who are fixated on traditional times....sheesh, they should've wake up and smell the coffee already.

reply

Sorry, but it's up to you 'good' guy muslims to force the others into line. We (westerners) cannot do it, we are instantly accused of racism. Perhaps it would have been better if muslims had not decided to come to the US for 'a better life', in such numbers because they mostly seem unable to settle, maintaing their traditional forms of dress and way of life, often publicing declaring that everything American is against islam. They seem to think that the US should alter its culture to suit them. We, Americans, would not even know about this if muslims in the US were not so in our faces about it all. It's a real problem but it's not of the west's making, and I think you really know the solution..

You think this film is horrible because the cab driver is cliched? Not because of the totally psycho bitch-queen? Or because it's a huge downer? People express some weird thoughts on these message boards.......
