The Remake

They should remake this with Jake Gyllenhaal & Scarlett Johansson in the leads with Paul Bettany as the husband and Keifer Sutherland as the detective.

It should be rewritten slightly so that the ghost bits at the end are more scarier and darker, as I found them a bit boring. And BinJip should escape from Prison using his newly discovered mutant powers.
The pace should be quickened cos at times the film dragged.

scarlett johanson, is she in the most pretentious movie in this century, i mean, lost in movi-making?

No, that would be Vanilla Sky.

And as for the topic at hand, I tend to agree with buchowski...

"Now you shall dance to our tune 'til you bleed. You shall dance ompa 'til you die."

reply

OK then, Lindsay Lohan cos she's hotter, but a little young. Maybe Kirsten Dunst instead, I think there would be real chemistry between her and Paul Bettany, just look at Wimbledon if you don't believe me, a real love story, WITHOUT all the subtitles.

alright...I think you guys need a sense of humor...dis_1 is obviously pulling your legs'.

I hope.

lost in translation is not pretentious. she is a fine actress. this film does not need to be remade.

reply

Who is BinJip?

"The pace should be quickened cos at times the film dragged" Try Sahara, it's probably more your sort of film.

reply

binjip means "empty house"

reply

I know, I was referring to the stupidity of the first post where Binjip is used in reference to the principal character and his "mutant powers."

reply

Have you been to the website imaginecasting.com? You can post a cast you want and people can vote on it. It's totally addictive.

No no, husband shoud be Brad Pit, wife can be Scarlett and the boy should be Will Smith. Imagine all that tension and moral values involved. ;P

Of course Pit would be a bit too young for husband, but with excelent George Lucas and his light and magic thingy it would work wonders.

reply

iii don't think they should remake it at all!!!

i have a huge problem with American remakes of Asian films.
sure, they can be good in their own right, but they are still just copies. and more often than not, not very good copies either.

whyyyy can't they think of their ooooown ideas??!?!??!?

reply

major lol

reply

[deleted]

These kind of remakes make me puke! I can't believe there are people that after seeing the original can be enthusiastic to see its dumb version for dumb americans. And I hate seeing hollywood making money on other peoples creativity.

reply

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEY someone who agreeees with meeee!

i HATE THEM SO MUCH.

if they were just made on their own, they were the AMERICAN'S ideas in the first place then i guess they could be good. but they are only STEALING OTHER GREAT IDEAS!!! because they are fools who have no imagination/talent.

excellent arguements. add to your list of stealers: christianity - or for that matter, all religions. How much of the local mythologies got gobbled up into christianity as it grew throughout the world? which myths were absorbed almost word for word, and which were twisted to fit the new "cast"?

there's no such thing as a story that's never been told.

reply

I'm curious: What is "Heat" a remake of?

I kinda agree with you that remakes can sometimes improve on the original (although I think it's rare), but CANNOT agree with you about "Robin Hood." The 1938 original with Errol Flynn is one of the most exciting, fun and entertaining movies ever made by Hollywood.

again, i emphasize, remakes are where TONS of films come from, just plain TONS. But let me also add, my primary reason for not wanting american versions of foreign language films is this: the storu only FITS in the correct language. Take for example Der Tunnel (2001). Can you even begin to imagine this in any language other than german?

reply

Yeah, Der Tunnel = Da Tunnel

You could have Ice Cube / IceT / Eminem in the leads and set it in a working class ghetto, with a banging soundtrack.

But this film about Bin-Jip needs a remake for the obvious reasons I have previously stated.
Even Superman Returns (which is a bit of a remake in itself) explains a bit of backstory, like how he got his super human powers.
This film doesn't, I want to know more about Bin-Jip.
I need to know where his mutant abilities came from first, then maybe a bit of love interest, then some kick-ass explosions before finally the bad-guy (i'm now thinking corrupt cop Danny Glover) gets his "just rewards" in an imaginative way (falls backwards onto a spike, impaling imself, is pretty original)

Is Bin-Jip a Japanese Manga comic, I can't find it anywhere on E-Bay?
Is it a bit more like Dragonball-Z than the slow paced film?

reply

Hey, i'm not a dumb American, i'm a dumb loyal Her Majesties Subject.
Whats wrong with somebody "tidying" up an overly complicated "revenge/vigilante" movie so it can be viewed (& enjoyed) by a larger (& betterer) audience?

reply

I can't believe there are people that after seeing the original can be enthusiastic to see its dumb version for dumb americans.

Oh! What delicious irony!!

I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!

reply

Surely you realize most movies are remakes. Not just (Shall We Dance) asian films. None of the films I have found remotely watchable in the past 5 years have been original. Spend more time in TCM, use your netflix to see everything worth watching that was made before 1948. You'll start to see remakes everywhere. Like if you're car shopping and you test drive a bug, all the sudden you see beetles on every corner!

I think your idea of a remake is great, you are very smart!!!!!!
and let me tell you that you have a very creative mind!!!!!
The only thing I will suggest is that Kiefer as the detective can hire
the Ghostbusters
So we can have an Scarlett Johansson & Bill Murray reunion
What do you think???????

reply

[deleted]

I think eddie murphy and jennifer lopez would be perfect for the leading parts. And schwarzenneger playing the cop.

what great sense of humor in this friendly forum

Ha ha ha. You guys are hilarious. I really like this board. I've never seen this kind of posts before and I think this is from these people's passionate caring of the original film. Director Kim should be happy to know that so many people here are showing their pouring interest in his fim. By the way, I haven't seen this film yet, but this board makes me really really curious about the film and I'm going to rent one tomorrow. Thank you, guys! I'll come up with the names of re-make actors after I watched this film. LOL

reply

sorry i HAVe to react on this one: it's a korean movie, not japanese
i know this topic is for fun (i hope) cause anyone even THINKING of remaking this gem should die the most horrible death and endure that pain for eternity in their own private hell. what i wish will happen to every single person involved in that f.kkd up lame-as.s remake of Wings of Desire (City of Angels)(god i f.kking hate remakes and sequels, even so much i'm not even gonna participate in thinking up the most f.kkd up american casting for this)
Bin Jip is the european title for those who are puzzled
i just love this movie, it's my nr.3 fav movie of all time, only topped by Wings of Desire (nr.1) and The Pillow Book (nr.2)

I haven't seen the film because I don't like subtitles, but it sounds like a good idea and if it was remade I think it might win an oscar. The people who made the first version would probably get some money for royaltys which is good because they don't have very much money abroad, and it might help japan recover from the tsunami.

Anyway, I think a good cast would be Pam Grier as the women, jim carey as the guy, someone disguised as oliver Reed (they did it in Gladiator, see imdb trivia) as the husband and Roman Polanski as the head cop. They should talk too. and also the guy should be an assasin and the woman could be someone he was meant to kill but fell in love with.

it should be directed by Daren Aronofsky because the drug bit in his films are cool.

guess joe's nationality >:-) (usually not one of the nationality bashers here but this is pretty obvious) funny cast though, funnier if you add the fact he hasn't seen this film at all :-s and what up with the darren aronofsky remark? he's an original moviemaker, he would never stoop down doing a remake ffs + there is no connection between bin jip and drugs at all :-/
funny post
but joe, comparing other posters who didn't like/understand this movie and your post....don't waste your time on this movie, i'm pretty sure you won't like/understand it either

Guess what country Mnemosyne-9 is from. I'm thinking somewhere without sarcasm.

reply

ManWithTwoRedShoes i wasn't commenting on the sarcasm/cast proposition, just the subtitle thing and the tsunami/japan remark
1.it's a korean movie
2.neither korea nor japan got hit by that tsunami
3.if the whole post was ment sarcastically then the man should work on finetuning his sarcasm a little bit :-p

ps:i'm a little sarcast wrapped in a human skin but the remake/sequel BS has always been a touchy subject to me so sorry bout that, can't help bashing on everything in reference to/favor off remakes and sequels
ps2:my apologies for the nationality remark, usually hate those things but just felt like it, big deal, everyone has his moments, right ;-)

reply

I've had a rethink Mnemosyne-9, and i think perhaps I was wrong about the cast.
To start with someone pointed out to me the other day that Roman Polanski and Darren Aronofsky arn't even american so they probably wouldn't fit in a hollywood film, So i think Arnold Schwarsneggar could be the cop instead.

reply

Sorry to tell you this but Darren Aronofsky was born and grew up in Brooklyn, NYC!!!!

reply

in the spirit of the poster who "doesn't like films w/ subtitles", i suggest for him/her they remake this with kate winslet and leo dicaprio, set it on a boat that hits an iceberg, and kathy bates can play the cop and billy zane the husband. that is if they let billy zane in a hollywood movie after that turkish film, valley of the wolves: iraq."

reply

Is any of this things serious, how people dare to destroy such a great movie like this? If they make a remake, it will be like killing kim-ki-duk... I canĀ“t understand how people (producers and all of them) can possibly think about making crap of diamonds.
