Am I the only one who adores this film?

I really don't understand why this film isn't rated higher on this site. Granted more men are members of IMDb and a lot of guys don't care for period pieces but women have ranked it low as well.
This is a brave and beautiful film. Of course it's not exactly historically accurate but I cannot help but feel the cinematagraphy, costumes and luscious looking pastries are mouth watering. I love the pastel colours! This stands as one of my most favorite period pieces. Doesn't anyone else like this film?

I think she's the saddest girl ever to hold a martini.

I absolutely adore it. Every part of it! I think it's wonderfully done. Not every movie, or every historic movie has to be done by a set of rules. I love the modern twist, the soundtrack and colors. And actually I think it probably is more realistic than people think when it comes to rich, spoiled, YOUNG royals with nothing better to do most of the time than indulge in what they are given. Certainly not all young royals are like this, there are many in history who do great things and care more about their political rankings and responsibility. But this was France, a country who is known for their posh and "life of leisure" and enjoying life. At that time obviously only the extremely rich could, and the peasants could not. And I know a lot of this film was embellished but I don't doubt they had parties like that, and it is very realistic that people in most high courts like that were known for gossip and superficiality. The style of the film was bold, and daring and entertaining. I like historic pieces that are more serious as well. But this interpretation has nothing wrong with it in my opinion. Also I think a lot of it was historically accurate in how people did disliked Marie Antoinette and all the shallow behavior and mistakes on her part are right there in Wikipedia and history books. So if you don't mind, could you explain to me the most inaccurate parts of this film? Does it have to do with the way Louis handled politics, or details like that? Because to be honest I wouldn't know too far int that sort of stuff. I think the famous "So let them eat cake" line, is quite influential and used as an overall theme in this film of the over-indulgence of a teenage queen who was bored out of her wits and knew nothing about poltiics. I believe to this day when she said that it was her being completely naive (not insensitive or cruel) I think she unfortunately for the most part had more of a simple mind. She was obviously someone with zest for life, freedom and fun, so that line whether its completely real or not, I believe she literally meant that. She didnt understand overspending or the actal selfisness on her part and everyone else's. She was def wrapped up in her world and should have known better in thinking what she said was possible. But again she was 19. Grew up rich, thrown into royalty, completely pampered day and night, and her biggest concern was making children. Which is a lot of pressure and I think to mask the fear and pressure of something like that she tried to hide it with her posh lifestyle, and find freedom wherever she could. She did have affairs, she did over spend money, she did have lavish parties too often, she WAS beheaded. She was a large part of things falling apart. Certainly not THE REASON. So I think this film has a lot of realistic scenes and accuracy and whatever inaccuracy it has I would like ot know because I am genuinely interested.

I think a lot of people disliked this film because Coppola played with a different sort of soundtrack, made Marie Antoinette seem a bit on the oblivious side and had very little action in it. The 'let them eat cake line' is up for interpretation anyway, that is, if she even said it at all because there is real historical evidence that proves she made that statement to begin with. A lot of films are not even close to being historically accurate as well and this is a bit of what we see here. Coppola obviously wanted us to see the young Queen who lived in luxury while her subjects starved outside the palace walls. I suspect some of what is said about her is true and a lot of it may not be because of her unpopularity not just because she was young but because of her gender and Austrian birth.

Totally got you. And agree again!

It's beautiful and perfectly captures the frivolity and soul-destroying lack of sensitivity and respect of the last court of the Ancien Regime. If you ever wonder why there was a revolution (and need simple, not structural answer) look at this film and then think of the hunger and oppression of the Third Estate.

I love this movie too, and was surprised to learn that it has such a low ranking here on IMDB. I do believe that the ending is quite rushed (compared to the pace of the 80% of the movie) but I can only plaud Sofia Coppola for her interpretation and her choices (for example completely excluding the people's side and thus showing how secluded and detached from reality Marie Antoinette's life was.)

I do agree about the ending. I thought some of her choices for the film were brave on her part.

I saw it after visiting Versailles, where the tour guide recommended it, and I think that made me appreciate it more. The cinematography and costuming are unsurpassed.

I do too.
