She seems racist

I consider myself very open minded but I did get uncomfortable with her act, as opposed to Lisa Lampenelli's material, which is also peppered with race jokes but somehow not as mean spirited. I just got the sense from Silverman's work that she wasn't completely kidding (and I do like her).

I personally have a fondness for Lisa Lampenelli and Sarah Silverman, but if I had to choose it would be Silverman. I think Lisa Lampenelli's humor isn't quite as meaningful. I don't necessarily find it offensive but she usually ends up explaining herself where as Silverman doesn't have to. Silverman's stuff is edgier, but it also has more relevant social commentary which makes it more provocative. Lampenelli just makes light of stereotypes, but Sarah Silverman actually forces you to face not just stereotypes, but racism and prejudice. I appretiate what she does and even though it's for laughs, who else is even willing to say what she is willing to say, seriously or not?

I DON'T think Sarah thinks horrible thoughts about other races, but she is insensitive to racial stereotypes. Does that make her a racist? Not in my opinion. I think racists will find her jokes funny, as well as non-racists, as well as people who feel that racial sensitivity is an imposition, yada yada yada. There's nothing wrong with being nonplussed by her jokes.

It's definitely a matter of trusting where she is coming from. If you think the meanness is genuine than you will definitely have a hard time appreciating her jokes. I found a lot of her material funny. The race thing, I thought she milked it a little too long, and I thought it was much less funny than the people around me. It's a good concept to explore but I think that to continue her success she's going to have to develop different kinds of material.

Using racial tension is a comedy shortcut to coming up with original material. Oh well, I love comedy and I want her to do well. If you laugh, enjoy, if you don't, just realize that people aren't going to feel the same way as you do. You can still love the funny stuff. I still like Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, Woody Allen, Dave Chapelle, Larry David and Ricky Gervais, mainly because I trust that their racial jokes are not done with genuine hate, so I laugh at the funny parts. Usually the racist jokes leave me cold after one listening at the most, the REALLY original stuff can make me laugh the 50th time I see it. I hope she continues to succeed, as she shows an incredible amount of talent.

Just my 2 cents worth...

In my opinion, great comedy makes you uncomfortable. Richard Pryor, George Carlin, & Lenny Bruce all made their audiences cringe at times. Modern comics in that same vein are Paul Mooney, Chris Rock, & Dave Chapelle.

It's not everyone's cup of tea, but that's the kind of comedy that keeps the artform going.

As a middle-aged black man, I don't have the first problem with her type of comedy. But then again, that's just my opinion.

she's racist but everyone is racist. the difference is, some people are hateful racists while other's don't mean any harm or hurt.

Yes, those who are "enlightened," and read Malcolm Gladwell's "Blink" would definitely understand racism is not necessarily bad.....it is only the emotion, malficience or beneficience, that is behind what we say about race. What do racist's essentially do in the literal translation of "racist?" Categorize races. It is a total neutral thing for most and as Gladwell talks about in Blink, it is scientifically proven that every person is a "racist." Yes, blacks have even the same sterotypes white people do for black people. And vice-versa. Anyway, Sarah tells us she is afraid of blacks, "but not afraid of *beep* Me....I just wonder why it is so important to only allow your own race to call you the "n" word and exclude all other races from referring to you as such??? If it is so horrible, than it would make sense that it would be frowned upon for anyone to say. Anyway, I am just a bitchy, white girl from Long Island with a potty mouth that wants to call everyone by the "n" word. I wish I could write it, bask in my alleged ignorance....really sink my teeth into it. Being offensive is kinda fun sometimes, okay a lot of the time, playing the devil's advocate, rockin' the cradle, pushin' the envelope. BEING OFFENSIVE IS FUN, AND HA, HA LOTS OF PEOPLE GOT THEIR PANTIES ALL UP IN A TWIST OVER JESUS IS MAGIC....HA, HA...LOSERS, SENSITIVE, 'UNRACIST,' CORNFED BIBLE BELTERS. ANYWAY, ON TO MORE INTERESTING TOPICS - LESBIAN COMEDY, IF ONLY MARGARET CHO WAS JUST ACTING SELF-RIGHTEOUS. PLEASE LET THERE NOT BE AN ASSOCIATION BETWEEN WHINING AND LICKING THE KITTY. SHE HIT ON SARAH AND SARAH GAVE HER TWO BLACK EYES, SWOLLEN FOR WEEKS. ALTHOUGH THAT WAS NOT TOO HARD TO DO. TRUE STORY.

I think she's the closest thing we have to a comic genius these days. She uses shock tactics to stir her audience, but also to make some pretty big statements about society. This is especially clear when she talks about how people don't like to use derisive language about people we fear, but are A-OK about using such language in regards to people we don't think of as threatening. (She recounts how her director tells her to use the phrase "the "N" word" in stead of *beep* but has no problem with her using the word "ch*nk." On the one hand, WTF, on the other hand...this is so typical of convenient political correctness....and it says a lot about just how far we still have to go.

You hit the Nail,...right on the head (Poor Willy) But YES! Sarah and George Carlin are to me, the 'Genius Comic's' that give us not only a 'taste' of Yesteryear' Type Comedian's/Fem's,...but so up to date and "Outrageously" FUNNY!!! I am DEF going to Tune in to Showtime for her Jesus Is Magic Show! Loved her in "School of Rock" AND "The Way of the Gun". She is not only a great comic, but a damn decent Actress as well. And she makes me "Weak In my Knees". Ha! Rock On!

She used to date a black guy, so I would guess she's not racist. (half-black...but still...if u are really a racist, you wouldn't date someone who's half-black).

I must say that I find the original post of this thread to be outrageous. Perhaps outrageous is too strong of a word, but I intensely disagree. I don't think there is any subtlety, wit, or even intelligence in Lisa Lampanelli's show. I've been to her show and I walked out. Unlike Sarah Silverman, Lampanelli has to pad herself at the end of the act, whereas Silverman doesn't. I feel like anyone could do what Lisa Lampanelli does, but she gets the spotlight for having the balls to go there. She just riffs on stereotypes, her comedy doesn't make you think, and it isn't fresh; what I find most offensive about Lisa Lampanelli's "comedy" is that she tries to offend you and lets that be the meat of it. I think Sarah Silverman is not for everyone but she is a very unique and fresh voice.

If you're all having so much trouble trying to figure out Sarah Silverman, I'd love to see you tackle Jerry Sadowitz!

But really. The comedian is on stage telling jokes and people are asking whether or not they're joking. People are f|ucking dense.

These bastards!
