The church scene was a real pain in the a$$

I'm white and not overly religious so maybe that is why this scene was very painful for me to watch, besides that it was so cheesy and stereotypical that I could hardly take it...

I'm black (not sure what race has to do with this conversation, but what the hey) and a God-fearing person and I loved this scene (one of my favorites in the movie). Having a different perspective is something, isn't it?

I'm white and it brought me to tears. It's about the power of God in people's lives, that we cannot do it ourselves, only by turning to Him.

The whole movie is very preachy. Black or white, a non-religious person will likely hate that scene. I'm black and not religious and did not like it, but I was warned by my sister that the movie is preachy. I get the POINT Tyler was trying to get across though.

This was when various characters redeemed themselves. They have done similar epiphany moments in lots of movies without religion involved. Once with it won't kill you.

It's also very representative of many black churches.

To see a Mother come from drugs to singing in church with her family is no pain in the as. I don't know many people who are not touched to the point of tears during the church scene. It is something that just happens, and if it does not happen to some people, it just does not happen. I do think the subject of your comment is a bit strong being that it is church we are speaking of. To see a woman and man who finally has true love is beautiful, and to see the abused wife leave with dignity and grace, not to mention love, is even more beautiful. In many movies, things that I don't find watchable, I... ff. In this movie, and all others when I find there is a part with passing gas etc. I always ff or I can never watch the movie again.

Omg to have the mom on drugs have a diva moment and waltz in for her solo was so cheesy. It was too over the top.

I thought that the scene was very inspiring! But, I was taken aback a bit by how amazing a singer the recovering wife was. Wow! 

She had a really nice voice but it just wasn't realistic that the recovering drug addict would come in at exactly that part and sing the solo. That never happens. My mom used to make me go to church for nearly 18 yes and nobody ever wandered in and just took over a song. Plus before that part happened I already predicted she was gonna come in.

I'm not religious and maybe that is why all the church scenes in his movies bother me. The singing is really annoying but in I Can Do Bad All By Myself, I found it weird just out of nowhere she would break into song even though the church was apparently down the street. It was kind of weird.

I'm Black, and not religious by any means. I couldn't deal with the preachy undertone of the movie either, but I understand its significance. The Church is a big staple in the Black community, and we have been constantly told to practice forgiveness, which IMO was the premise of the movie.

Honestly what annoyed me most was the whole savior aspect of the Orlando character. SO unrealistic.

I'm far from religious, but too many black movies make a mockery out of church.
