Based on true story?

Surprisingly it was in fact entirely made up. Horrific and dark as it may be, it comes from Nick Cave's dark imagination, mixed with his trademark profoundly beautiful spin on the dark and horrific.

It was, however, very well researched so that a lot of the details of the background were accurate to the time and place, and that really comes through on the screen.

I was wondering specifically if the Hopkins event was real. At the open of the movie, there are a series of old photographs, and one has some writing on it "The Hopkins Outrage" or something like that. Were those authentic photos of the period, or just props for the movie?
