In my opinion there isn't a right answer here. If you want to think it was all in his head, then fine. If you want to think it all actually happened, also fine. There isn't any definite evidence either way.

I do think that "it was all a dream" stories are taboo for experienced writers. This makes me doubt that the makers of this film wanted it to definitely be a dream, but there's no doubt that they left it open for interpretation.

Either way, the film is excellent.

i just watched this excellent film and i also disagree with the imagined-theory...i had a theory myself that relied on certain elements of magic realism....i feel as though the dog psychically engineered the entire sequence of events by manipulating the main character. the dog seems capable of this. there is one incredibly powerful scene when the dog smells the main character. then smells his groin, almost as though he were trying to detect if the main character had enough balls to follow through with what was going to happen. he then glances up at the main character with a look of almost total authority. neither julio, the girl, nor the dog were happy with the current situation. they all hated dietrich and julio was a jerk to the girl as well. they were all looking for an escape and the epileptic seemed to provide a way out. the dog seems to establish a sort of psychic connection with the epileptic and seems to trigger some of his visions/aura. when we see the dog run past him with blood on his snout, he seems to be communicating to the epileptic that things will shortly get very violent but he must persist. this was just an idea that i had, and i would have to watch the film again to see if it actually could be plausible.

the dog definitely had a mystical, spiritual quality...like an animal spirit guide found in native american mythology.
