How far apart can people be in age and have a relationship?

I know in the movie it was like a ten year difference between the two of them. But how far apart in age is too far? ten years is obviously alot but what about like four or five years?

or does it depend on the teenagers to adult thing.

Like a thirty year old and a thirty five year old would be no big deal but what about like a twenty year old and a sixteen year old?

What do you guys think?

I think once someone is out of their teens i.e 20 then the perception changes. It's strange that a year makes a difference but it does.

If impersonating a Police Officer is an offence, shouldn't actors be imprisoned?

IMHO, it's not something special about turning 20, rather it's being on your own.

That first year out of your parents house, you have to grow up a bit more than in any prior year.

That's part of the reason why a 14 year old from a bad home can be more mature than a 21 year old from a privileged one.

With bad parents, or in a bad situation, children have to grow up too fast. While if coddled by privilege one could remain an adolescent in mind set well into the twenties or later.

Back in my mid twenties, I knew a 15-year-old who was more mature than most of my peers (myself included).

My mom graduated high school 5 months after my dad was born. That is a 17 year age difference. They made it work somehow. Hugh Hefner is 81 and his girlfriends are <35. You can be any age and have a relationship with anyone.

well in the US you could legally have a "relationship" with a 20 year old if you were sixteen but you couldn't have any sex until you were 18.

reply

Nope nope nope. Depends on the state. I live in Maryland where legal age of consent is 16.

And also, it's not just about having sex with a 20 year old. When you're under age of consent, you can't legally have sex with ANYONE, even if they're also under age of consent.

Another thing. In Maryland, once you're 16, you can have sex with anyone 18 or 17, but not older. When you're 17, you can have sex with anyone 18 or 19, but not older. Then when you turn 18, you can have sex with anyone of any age you like.

That is a good question. A weaknesses of this movie is that it did not really explore this question. It simply accpeted conventional wisdom and kept the characters at a distance.

To answer your question, first of all I think there is no absolute here. Different people will have different answers.

As for me, I think love to oimportant and rare to pass on simply because of age differences.

For an interesting recent and different take on this question see "Venus" with Peter O Toole (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0489327/).

Im 20 years old and my step mom is 27. My dad is 47, that is a 20 year difference. She's a really down to earth person and im happy for my dad. I'm not entirely sure how they met... they seem to avoid that question :P They dont have any unusual problems other couples dont have.

For me personally I think i prefer to be with a younger woman.

Well lets see
my mom and my dad were 14 years apart
and my grandma and grandpa were 7 years apart
I think after the age of 18
it doesnt really matter
Idk thats just me

We're friends with two different couples that are many years apart in age.

One couple is 17 years apart in age and it's the wife that is older. He's 28 and she is 45. We met them them just a couple weeks after they got married. All their friends were totally unsupportive and they pretty much had to break ties with everybody if they wanted to be happy.

Physically, their age difference is somewhat noticeable but I never would have guessed it was 17 years. He acts older and she acts younger, and once you've known them for a while, you just stop noticing the age difference at all. They have an amazingly wonderful marriage and are so compatible.

Our other friends are are 16 years apart. She's 37 and he's 53. It is sort of creepy that his wife is only three years older than his oldest daughter from his first marriage. But, they've been married for over 15 years and you don't really notice their age difference either.

I guess for some couples age is an issue, and for others it isn't.

I guess it all depends on the maturity levels on how far apart age difference can work. My girlfriend is 19 and I'm 24 and we sometimes get criticized for our age difference, which we both find absurd. I'm still in college and I still act like I'm in my late teens, and she acts more like someone in her early 20s, so it all balances out.

An example of a relationship with a further age-difference that I think is a NO-NO is some 25 year-old guy at my church who is currently dating a 14 year-old girl. My church is big (with over 10,000 members) and several people have called the authorities, yet no charges can be filed against the guy because the girl's parents refuse to press charges. Surprisingly, they don't see what all the fuss is about.
