Wretched Subtitling on This Film

This movie has the absolute worst subtitling I've ever seen, and I have seen many foreign-language films.

Whenever the subtitle changed from two lines to one lines, the upper line would always remain on screen until a two-line subtitle returned. So, a number of times in the film, the subtitles seem moronic, as if the characters are continuing to repeat the same first line over and over again.

In a number of non-dialog scenes, when no subtitling was needed, two blank subtitle cursors appear on the screen endlessly, ruining the picture.

Then, of course, considerable passages of text which appear on screen in Japanese, plus assorted voiceovers, are not subtitled at all.

I think a chimpanzee with a box of crayons could've done a better job subtitling this movie.

I didn't notice any synching problems when I watched the film. I wouldn't put it in the same category of crappy subtitling as seen in some other foreign DVD releases - Blood: The Last Vampire had some horrendously bad subtitles.
I will completely agree with you that they half-assed the translation of text items. I noticed it most in one of the later scenes when the guy finds himself back in the insane asylum and there's a montage of five or six of the crazy guy's scrawls and they don't tell us what any of it means!!!

I didn't get that with my dvd, you sure it wasn't just your copy or maybe your tv? My tv tries to do subtitles sometimes and its just nasty.

reply

Are you sure it was subtitles and not closed captioning?

Generally, closed captioning is white on black, and performed by the decoder in the TV. Subtitles are actually images placed over the film at specific spots.

Then again, it could have been or scuffed disc. It could also have been a dirty lens on your player. I have had no problems with the disc.

Try the fan-subs if you want to see dodgy subbing >.< I appreciate people making fan-subs, but half the film was missed out because it wasn't subbed or was Engrish. Argh.

The fansub I watched was some of the worst subtitling I've ever seen, period.

reply

It must've been your copy, since mine was not like that at all.

Ummm... Inuyasha 3: Swords of an honorable ruler had terrible subs.

We just cut up our girlfriend with a chainsaw. Is *that* fine?- Mirror Ash, Evil Dead 2

If you want truly terrible subtitles, I own a Korean imported DVD of Battle Royale with English and Korean subtitles...

My favorite lines would have to be, "What is best thing about adult?" and "That knife that I stabed with you, sometimes I think I just threw it but now is my treasure."

I'm afraid I have that exact same DVD. My faves are, "That were my friends!" and "You must be strong... not like momy!"

GUINEA PIG 2: FLOWER OF FLESH AND BLOOD has laughably bad subs too. Such as "She is in a unconschis state" and "I will add her to my colecshin" made me laugh. The fifth one, Android Of Notre Dame made me laugh too. "Molekules"... LOL

I'm the man doing his job. You must be the other guy.

It is often the VCD or imported DVD versions of things that have poor English translations, sometimes it seems like the English translation has been translated from (say) a Chinese translation of the original Japanese or Korean. My version of Ju-On 2 is completely psychedelic in this respect ! The Tartan release UK DVD seems fine, though i agree with the point about dodgy written text translations. I guess its a good incentive to persevere with learning new languages !

The subtitles of the one i watched were fine. Although I understand japanese i didn't really need them... a lot of them were wrong anyways.

The subtitles themselves were alright, but the translation wasn't very good.
