Let's put it this way. This director was already on my poop list for his previous few films. This was not an isolated career mistake but part of a pattern of pretty sharp and obvious career decline. Unless you are living in a major city, his films are not usually widely released outside of China. Therefore, it takes a special effort to see his films in the theater when they are released in the U.S. I have always made a point to drive as far as necessary to attend one of Zhang Yimou or Pedro Almodovar's movies in a theater. Chen Kaige was once the type of director I might make that effort for based solely on reputation, sight unseen. I won't say I will never watch one of his films again, just that I will never make a special effort again. If I can check it out from the library a year or so later, fine. If there is a Chinese movie that looks interesting to me, I might watch it, and if it happens to be directed by Chen Kaige so much the better. Unless it is being acclaimed as God's Own Film, I doubt I would watch just for the fact that he directed, however.
