As for Leonard Cohen - that's a great version of Hallelujah, but my favourite song of his is Suzanne: '...and she feeds you tea and oranges that come all the way from China' - love that line. You can smell the oranges and imagine the tea clipper and a time when China was not hours away but months and the delivery would depend on the monsoon in the China See and tradewinds over the Indian Ocean.

The term 'tradewinds' alone makes me all giddy with the old travel bug. Would love to go on a sailing cruise one day (once they invent an ocean which doesn't make you seasick )

Oh - look at this

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Tea_Race_of_1866

In the middle third of the 19th Century, the clippers which carried cargoes of tea from China to Britain would compete in informal races to be first ship to dock in London with the new crop of each season. The Great Tea Race of 1866 was keenly followed in the press, with an extremely close finish. Taeping docked 28 minutes before Ariel - after a passage of more than 14,000 miles.

Easy to imagine how the bookies went crazy over that one. 

Judging by the route indicated on that wiki site, the tea clippers would actually have passed La Reunion on their way from the Philipines to South Africa. People might even have been able to spot them from those mountains and see them race each other! 

Whenever I find myself in an airplane, elbows tucked in tightly under my ribs (both mine and those of various people sitting next to me), my knees in a tight knot, and try to eat what might be chicken () and peas in gravey with a plastic fork while keeping my hands crossed at the wrists, I promise myself never to fly anywhere ever again.

Then as soon as I get home I try to figure out where to go next.  It's all that keeps me bouncing in this weather. 

It was very rough that day. Quite a few people didn't make it down to dinner that night. I did but could only manage an omelette. It was quite funny in the afternoon watching people trying to learn how to line dance while the ship was rocking so badly.

And that was on one of those big ferries. 

The ship we were on was a converted ferry. I've done three cruises with the same company, not for a few years though. I've never been on one of the large cruise ships. I couldn't afford it, but to be honest I'm not sure I would like to be one too large.

Where did those cruises take you?

The only cruise-like trip I went on was in Chile on a ferry that took us along the coast to St. Raphael glacier which was still calving into the sea at the time (it's probably melted by now). It also transported cattle along the route as there are very few roads in the southern part of Chile.

Spent three night sleeping on a reclining chair in the hull of the ferry together my boyfrend and about 200 Chileans. They were the kindest people ever - all the time somebody would come over to share their food or let us have a sip from a bottle or have a chat (we both didn't speak much spanish but they kept trying anyway). When we got to the glacier we were bundled into small dinghies to get closer and the people in our dinghy started singing 'gracias a la vida'. It was really lovely. There were also about a dozen people coming over and hugging us goodbye when we left the ship which was totally unexpected 

What a beautiful song. I have it in my head now

I did one to Norway and the Fjords, one which went around Italy and the adriatic (that was the one where we visited Sicily). The last one I did in 2005 started in Turkey, then on to Egypt and Jordan. I think what got me interested in cruising was a day long ferry trip to Prince Rupert when I was on holiday in Canada in 1998.

It was really lovely. There were also about a dozen people coming over and hugging us goodbye when we left the ship which was totally unexpected 

Growing up watching "Growing Pains", Alan Thicke was one of my favourite TV dads.

The pleasure in seeing him on TV these days one way or another, only reaffirmed what a cool Canadian cad he was.

Sad to know that his time is done now especially so soon after seeing him in the pilot episode of "This is Us" playing himself.

Here are some of the tributes from his fellow GP cast members, including Kirk Cameron and Leonardo diCaprio: http://www.eonline.com/news/815877/growing-pains-stars-leonardo-dicaprio-kirk-cameron-and-more-pay-tribute-to-alan-thicke?utm_source=eonline&utm_medium=rssfeeds&utm_campaign=imdb_topstories

Particularly relevant for us as we have a few asylum seekers from Iran in our congregation who were persecuted in their own country. One in particular who has been a member of the congregation for several years and attends every week, has just had his application turned down. Despite support from our minister the Home Office said that they do not believe he is a practising Christian. What else can he do to prove it?  He is appealing the decision. Good news though that another family from Pakistan who attend our church had their application accepted recently and they have been allowed to stay.
