I am shocked!Budget 13 million$ + box office:only 3 million $???

People...
I don't get it..
That movie was really good.
Samuel Jackson was great in his interpretation, his voice change was genius, his facial change, the way he walks!
Story was great...
Josh was good too...

It cost 13 millions $ and made in the USA + foreign box office:3 million $ only???
WTF?????

Why?????
Tell me why????
This is so unfair!
You guys are crazy!
People see stupids movies like Meet the Spartans who made more than 30 millions $, the money will be used to make more stupids movies like that..
And good movies like Resurecting the Champ are making the producer go bankrupt and the movie business will not finance movies like that...
This is so sad, really...
To make a good movie, like this movie and to lose so much money...really sad..

Sam.

Welcome to the world of the lowest common denominator.

It 'aint pretty, and it's only going to get worse with time.

reply

IMO They didn't really market it very well.

reply

Yea, I never heard of this till I saw it in blockbuster

reply

i never heard of it till i looked up jackson on imdb

reply

Very unfortunate that the marketing for this movie was *beep* I never heard of it until Netflix, but it was good. Much better than other, more popular *beep* released in 2007.

reply

Yep, Meet The Spartans is that stupid movie parody of the great movie "300"!

So if anybody reading this post is in the movie industry, maybe he could answer to my questions..
As for "the movie was not well marketed", I agree...but why did they not market it well? How come?I don't get it, really...
So when the guys behind the money saw the movie, they thought the movie sucked and did not deserve to be seen in the theatres???So "guys, let's not put any money for the marketing, we spend a lot of money on this project, but let's burried it"?

Yeah, I also didn't know about this movie until I saw it in Blockbuster, but aI can understand why it didn't do well in box office receipts.
It was an 'uneven movie', good in parts, but a movie that was a bit too predictable and it didn't have the heart to really tie its story up in a realistic way.

reply

great movie. 7.5/10

Box Office performance is pretty bad. They should have marketed it more

reply

I saw a few trailers before it came out and that was it, it disappeard. That or people are getting burned out on Samuel Jackson, great actor. He's everywhere.

reply

Lack of advertizing and probably a small release caused this. Studios choose what films to push more than others, and they can't push all of them at the same time.

reply

DIdn't it come out at the end of summer?

It was released at the wrong time.

It should have been released November or December. It is a serious movie that could have garnered Oscar buzz for Samuel L possibly.

Being released at the end of the summer in late August was just stupid.

It was an ok movie. IT wasn't marketed very well. But who would they have marketed it to?

Josh is a young actor, but not sure his fans would flock to this.

Samuel L has an audience, but would they come see this? Obviously not.

Who does this movie appeal to?

poor marketing...saw this on IMDB before it was released and was looking forward to watching it, but was surprised that the movie passed me by...had to watch it some other way

I totally agree with Samfortune2004. I saw the movie yesterday and thought it was absolutely great. I was really into it from start to finish. Jackson plays one of those all-the-way characters, with a specific walk, talk, make-up and what have you. A sad character, very well done by Sam Jackson. Josh Hartnett was good too, as were the supporting actors. Finally a likeable movie with some substance and a good message.

It wasn't even released in theaters here in Holland... a damn shame indeed. I had to get it through the familiar, less legal method.

But then suddenly there was Meet the Spartans... in Dutch theaters. And it didn't do too bad either. My god, the general audience seems to be getting dumber and dumber, and as mentioned before: marketing and advertising (media in general) play a great part in this development. "Keep the people numb and dumb" seems to be their collective post 9-11 mission statement.

reply

"Keep the people numb and dumb"
Yes, the success of crass and crap films like Meet the Spartans only seems to confirm that. Pathetic really and ironic that the director was trying to revive the intelligent thought provoking movies of an earlier age like All the President's Men. Movies like that are very thin on the ground these days.

Alot of people go to the movies to escape real world issues.

Being on the edge of their seats with action or just getting a good laugh with comedy is what people are about now.

This movie was a solid movie. But it doesn't appeal to a large audience.

Ever notice that most of the movies that win Oscars are movies the general public hates.

There are a few movies over the years that have appealed to large audiences and have won oscars. In recent years they have been looking at popular movies instead of just small unknown movies.

How can a movie really win best picture when nobody saw it? The "academy" likes stuff, but the general public hates it.

Sad and depressing does not me good.

That really doesn't apply to this movie though, but I had to rant!

Yes, was thinking the same thing when I saw the figures. These kinda films get made less and less. I just hope Rod Lurie tries to make more like this on, and not go the safe way: lot's a explosions and car chases or just Adam Sandler making not so funny jokes about poo and the dollars come rolling in.

RtC wasn't Oscarmaterial, but it was an honest, simple movie that relied on the acting and the story. Most films today rely on special effects and the making the most noise when buildings explode.

"They call it a change-over. And no one in the audience has any idea".

It looks like a great movie to me.
I have it recorded on my DVR and will watch it shortly.

I come in to the forums to see what is said about movies prior to watching them occasionly.
Not looking for spoilers just wanting to get the gist of comments.

Usually if people rant about how terrible a movie is it actually interests me to watch it myself and make my own decission about the movie.

I was highly impressed with most of the comments here as to marketing and so forth.

I would like to add that I think most box office ratings/earnings come from young teenagers.

Most well to do familys today watch movies at home on HDTVs.
They invest much money in graphics enhansing equipment and so therefore wants to watch Graphics on their TVs to get the most out of their investments.

Young teenagers? well we know what appeals to the majority of them.
If it isn't advertised on videogame discs or websites then they have no idea it exists.

It is the world we live in today.
Fast Paced, graphics oriented, Commputer generated & advertising blocked.
