Farewell to Samantha?

I just was checking out the American Girl website and it says they are retiring Samantha to the "American Girl archives". This is the last chance to purchase Samantha and any of her belongings. I can't believe this. I always thought Samantha was the most popular of the American Girl dolls. How can they retire one of the first Pleasant Company dolls? I wish Mattel had never taken over Pleasant Company. They have ruined it.

I recently saw the same thing in our American Girl Catalog (Which I don't even know why we are still getting one... I'm 17 and my sister is 14) it really ticked me off when I saw that. It made me sad also.

I'm 16 and Samantha was the first American Girl Doll I got. When I saw they were they were retiring her I about cried! How can they take her away!??

I think this is horrible. I remember when there were just the original three--and Samantha was the 'glamorous one' which people wanted.

I can't believe that Mattel did this to such a popular character. Didn't they realize that people LOVE Samantha!

reply

Its ridiculous...she was always the most popular...I think they could lose Kirsten or someone and no one would mind...well, I am glad I had one at one point...thanks to a cousin however, she had her head popped off, and I never got around to sending her to the doll hospital...oh well...

What were the original 3?

I'm royally pissed and dissappointed. The last two new historical girls have been blonde. Now they are discontinuing a beloved character? I'm surprized, I'd been hearing for a while they were about to retire Addy (for reasons I don't even wanna go into) and Felicity.

Ivy was added as a friend to Julie as an afterthought only and hasn't even gotten anymore new clothes accessories. She is basically a token Asian girl.

do they realize a lot of American Girl fans are NOT all blonde girls?

These are becoming a precursor to Barbies, aren't they?

They could have made Ivy the American girl and Julie the friend. I've not been impressed with the quality since Mattel aquired them. And I've not yet heard a plausible explaination why Felicity's dress pattern was changed.

~ My mother & I were so sad to find out that Samantha was going into the American Girl Archives. She's one of my favorite doll from the collection. Samantha is simply precious and timeless. We're really going to miss her alot.

Why are they even doing this? And when did Mattel get the American Girl company? Samantha was my fav. out of all of them.
I still have my Samantha Doll and accessories which i got for Easter in the 1990's!

I was really upset when I saw they were retiring Samantha. I received my first American Girl Doll(Molly), when I was about 6 with Samantha following about 2 years later. American Girl has become a tradition for my cousins and I ever since we were little, and to think that one of our favorites is being retired is really upsetting! As many people on here have said, I wholeheartedly agree that Matel taking over Pleasant Company was a bad move. In the past few years, I have noticed that the quality of the clothes and the furniture have gone down when compared to what they were when Pleasant Company still ran everything. I know that before 1997, all the American Girl dolls were made in Germany, but when Matel took over production was moved to China. I hope that Matel will come to their senses one day and realize that they are making the American Girl line look cheap, and well, not as great as they once were.

They're getting rid of Samantha?! That's insane!! I didn't even know Matel took over; that explains everything, the greedy little creeps. They have no right retiring ANY of those classic girls!! And yes, people WOULD care if Kirsten was got rid of. I can't believe they spoke of getting rid of Addy, possibly the most unique of the girls and with some of the most exciting and brave adventures. And Felicity?!! These people are crazy, and they'll regret it.

i am so mad, i always wanted a Samantha doll but never got one:( now i can't

American Girl brought back Samantha as part of their Beforever line but she has a different outfit than the retired edition had. and the second doll that returned to the Beforever line was Felicity in a different outfit as well. I found an original Samantha in a thrift shop and bought her minus her hat and I didn't know she was retired and she's great. But American Girl hasn't brought back Kirsten and Molly yet to the Beforever line. But I think Mattel made a wrong move and bought Pleasant Company because had Pleasant T. Rowland had made the decision to retire and sell Pleasant Company to Mattel American Girl would not be in the mess they're currently in. My first American Girl doll was Josefina because she looked like me and she was from New Mexico and then I got Kirsten and later Kaya and Kaya was the first doll that was made by Mattel but the back of my Kaya doll's head is marked PLEASANT COMPANY and not MATTEL INC. But if American Girl keeps this up and does not improve in the future I think they will go broke in a few years
