Some incredible ignorance about sex trafficking on the board

Every year millions of people are trafficked across borders and what makes the movement of these victims so easy is CORRUPTION. Border officials, cops, guards etc are being paid sometimes double or triple their salary to STFU, maybe even enjoy the fruits of trafficking themselves.

For the traffickers and pimps the money is ridiculous. You sell an ounce of coke and it's done. A sex slave can be sold over and over. And they are, until they become too sick or old to continue. Then, if they're not rescued, they're disposed of.

The mark up is enormous, far bigger than any other trafficked product. With that amount of money to be made, it's no surprise the will to stop this disgusting trade is so low.

Politicians are corrupt too. Hence why it's so difficult to get governments to commit wholeheartedly to stopping sex trafficking.

Who is benefiting from these trafficked individuals besides the traffickers and pimps? The johns. Who are the johns? They could be ANYONE, including high level officialdom. Sex on tap, sometimes quite cheaply because the victims are slaves, and not actual prostitutes. Sex with people they ordinarily wouldn't likely get it from - virgins, very young women, children (girls AND boys).

Every year thousands of Western men with deep pockets travel to parts of the world where sex with underage and barely legal young people is easy to get. Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, border towns in various countries where poorly paid officials are easily corrupted. It's easier in countries with little or no child protective services.

The victims have their families threatened to keep them from running away. In some cases, very poor people actually sell their own children into slavery because they can't afford to keep them. Suicide is common, as for many they feel it's their only way out.

Instead of asking stupid questions and making ignorant assumptions about what you think would and wouldn't happen in these situations, read books like one called "Not For Sale" by David Batstone. Go to the website by the same name and follow them on twitter and Facebook. You will learn SO MUCH about this horrific trade - everything from what trafficking entails to what happens to the victims.

It's happening globally. It's not just East European girls and kids from the Far East. It's GLOBAL.

This film did show how it is for some victims. It was different in that it focused only on a couple of them. Another harrowing film that focused on one victim was called Lilya 4 Ever. It's set in post-Soviet Russia and you will need a strong constitution to watch it because it's so bleak and tragic. I cried so much watching that.

Other very realistic films include Sex Traffic, Human Trafficking, and there's one based on a true story called The Whistleblower, starring Rachel Weisz.

The more you learn about thus awful trade the more you become determined to be part of the solution. I work hard to spread awareness because unfortunately there is a lot of denial about this. Because it's global, someone you know and love could become a victim, so it's in all our interests to stop it.

Sermon over.

I thought this was incredibly well said, and wanted to thank you for your effort and passion with this. It's mind boggling that this is still happening every day and in every part of the world.

Serious issue; terrible movie.

reply

It's not a terrible movie. A terrible movie is you-choose-the-B-movie. I get that you don't like the movie, but terrible? Really? That's not fair. It had an okey filming and an okey story. So it should be "OK", not "terrible". Terrible is something you give like a b-movie from SyFy-channel.

reply

“a b-movie from Sy-Fy channel” is a redundancy.

Thank you for saying it!
