Just re-watched... have a question

I just re-watched this on Netflix after years and years. I enjoyed it, but acknowledge that the plotting has some issues that have been hashed out here already. The directing though was solid.

My question:

1. Aside from the lead vampire, the rest of them had these weird eyes. They looked almost like they were afflicted with Down's Syndrome. The eyes were like slits and even the skull structure around the eyes was more pronounced.

I couldn't find any explanation or discussion of this. What was that about?
