The Dutch praise their own no matter what.

I've lived in The Netherlands/Holland for 24 years now. Born and raised here.
And if I have learned anything it is that my fellow Dutchies suck at rating their own worthless products.

Every single Dutch film that comes out is hailed with praise and glory, just because it is Dutch. Films like Zwartboek, Volle Maan, Wit Licht are all praised to the heavens when any objective viewer will immediately recognize them as utter crap. It sickens me to hear people talk about those flicks as if they were masterpieces.

And believe me, it doesn't stop there. You should listen to a couple of random tracks of praised music artists like Frans Bauer, Jan Smit, De Toppers etc.
Then you will know why we smoke so much weed...

Zwartboek, like any other Dutch film, is heavily overrated and should have a 3.2 instead of a 8.0. The number is only made up of Dutch egos without taste.
"Look world, we have more to offer than hookers and weed."

No we don't.

Speak for yourself dude.

Althrough i agree it is overrated, i think it should be about 7, not 3.2

In this universe, there's only one absolute... everything freezes!

reply

Yeah speak for yourself! Not every Dutch person believes this movie is the best they've ever seen. Me included. But there are a lot worse Dutch movies, like the other ones you just mentioned!
And définitely not every Dutch person likes Dutch music like all those artists from Volendam, de Toppers or whatever. I'm an example of it! I find it very insulting that you pretend you're the only Dutch person in the world that thinks to know what good taste is about!

By the way, I don't smoke weed at all!

reply

I've lived in The Netherlands/Holland for 25 years now. Born and raised here. And I agree with you on at least one point: Dutch music is generic and retarded and overrated by everyone except non Dutchies. But I wouldn't say all our films suck, I rather enjoyed Karakter, van God Los and Simon. I do smoke weed.

reply

The movie is BRILLIANT.

And you are a really pathetic person. Like REALLY PATHETIC.

"Let's hear you call Boris Karloff a c_ocksucker."

i'm dutch lived in britain for many years and yes some dutch music is bad, and overrated but a film like zwartboek is a masterpiece no dout the film is amazing and if you dont like it find some good reasoing to why, dont say you dont like it cause its dutch.

reply

I'm Canadian, not Dutch, and I gave the movie an imdb rating of 8/10.

I'm Dutch and i agree with you. But it is the same everywhere or even worse. I lived in the Philippines for three years. Dutch arrogance is nothing compared to what i have come across over there.

reply

maybe it's a colonial attitude

reply

'Philippino arrogance'?? Hmm! Try TURKISH ARROGANCE to get some REAL ATTITUDE. They wont even admit they committed genocide on the Armenians! Talk about arrogant nationalism!! :(

reply

Are you Armenian? Maybe Greek? Ax to grind? Do you even know any Turks? If you did, you might understand their point of view; tired of constantly being damned for attrocities that occured under the Ottoman Empire that have nothing to do with modern day Türkiye. And WTF is "arrogant nationalism"? What pussy-whipped excuse for a country do YOU live in that has no real national idenity left? At least the Turks have a little bit of love for their country. Oh, but wait... love of country is wrong ain't it? Must. Join. New. World. Order. Without. Question. Grow a pair and stop being a whiner.

reply

I went to Holland once. I do smoke weed but didn't visit any hookers.

reply

I gave it a 9 (would've been 9.5 if I could figure how), because it kept me guessing at every turn, while never losing my interest -- and I do well at guessing which are the culprits, which the good'ns most of the time. Three cheers on top of a hearty well done!!

Well, that doesn't say much. According to the list you made you've rated 1,754 Titles a 9 or a 10. So that you have this one 9 stars isn't a surprise lol. I totally agree with this topic by the way. I'm from the Netherlands too and all these movies and music are just pure crap and everyone here loves it.

reply

I agree hundred 100% with concerning the musical artists you have mentioned. Wihth Dutch movies it is a different story. You have good and bad Dutch movies just like all things in live. Zwartboek was close to a masterpiece for me. But I try to judge the quality not the country from which is it made.

I also do not take weed.

reply

I completely disagree with you on the main subject of your post.
I have lived in the Netherlands for 36 years and generally the Dutch are too critical of anything Dutch.
Their history, their culture, their movies and their part in WW2.

But in this I agree with you, Blackbook is HEAVILY overrated.
I think this is because that old grey idea of WW2 still lives, the idea that our resistance wasn't all good, the Germans werent all bad and most people during the war were neutral.
Because Verhoeven is kicking against these old ideas of WW2 people assume his movie must be good.
Anyone who has read more then a few books on WW2 will know that Blackbook really isn't telling us anything new or shocking and that the storyline is full of holes.

OF COURSE we have a LOT more to offer then hookers and weed, sadly the bad view most uneducated foreigners seem to have of our country is the same many Dutchmen seem to have.
We have a minority complex and when this is nurtured in movies like Blackbook we seem to love it.

When we see a educated historically accurate movie or documentary about the war that makes us feel a bit less bad about our country during the war we automatically start attacking it and bringing up 'facts and figures' from 1960s books.
