The debated 3rd season.....

Before I watched the series I was was warned by a few people of the 3rd season. Telling me that the series goes to pot at the end. While I admit that it may not be as outright funny as the previous two... it does a fine job of wrapping up this amazing series, and rounds out the characters nicely. While it may not be as good as the first two... Does it make it bad? I think it's still way better than what gets passed off as "good television" these days....

LOVE the third season! All the seasons are good, but I might like this one best, because its Shakespearean acting is the finest, and given the most focus. (The Hamlet from season 1 was rather lame, though he was supposed to be "amazing".)

<< In the third season, [Richard] doesnt. It's like Anna said, he almost became human. I'm okay with that. There are several people I've know(n) that almost become human, but fall short. >>

Yup. I think it would have been a kind of frail ending if everything were sunshine and lollypops.

I enjoyed the third season immensely. There was more Shakespeare, a superb actor playing Lear, and a very satisfying closure to the series. Yes, it was darker, but the writers/producers took a risk rather than do the same thing for a third time. And far better than most of the dreck on the tube.

Exactly my view. I admired that they went forward and did something new with the third series. They didn't give the audience what (one would assume) the audience wanted or expected. And they really made Richard a dick.

Although they never really explained the crying.

It was my understanding that Geoffrey cried because he was concerned about being a sell-out. His plays were raw, human, and thought-provoking. In Season 1, Oliver became a staggering drunk and was dismayed over his past artistic accomplishments and his current play being called "old boot," and over and over the series made the point that Geoffrey valued art over commercialism - the same thing Oliver valued (while both alive and dead) and used to work toward. Then Season 3 started with a glossy, tacky, over produced introduction to Geoffrey's work - showing that the money-obsessed suits had taken over the art - and Geoffrey started crying.

The story arc of season 3 is VERY Shakespearean. I just rewatched the series and have a whole new appreciation for the third season.
