Does Karas die?

At the end, after Karas shoots Ilona, does he die or survive? While you see him lying to Bislane at the end, it seems very dreamlike, as if he is imagining what he will say as he lies dying from that incapacitating gunshot wound to the back. Besides, the men who shot him were trying to kill him in the first place and now they had extra reason.

You should let people know your post has major plot spoilers, bub.

speaking of which, SPOILERS BELOOOOOOW!

And yes, I think he dies... I think the movie ended wonderfully... not on a happy note, nor a successful one, but effective. The immediate danger was side-stepped, but not destroyed. Karis did his job; did all he could.

Excellent movie all in all, minus some supposide plot *beep*

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to return some video tapes.

reply

That's how I interpreted the ending as well, that he died.

reply

interesting.

I thought he lived, due to him telling the sister that she was incognito...
was that his imagination, then???

reply

I think you're supposed to think Karas dies shortly after the film closes, but it is not explicitly shown. I very much doubt we'll ever see Karas again in any potential sequel, if that's what you're getting at. I *am* very interested in more stories from this brilliant filmmaking team, in this or a similar visual style.

This film is soo good. The score it got on IMDB is unfairly low. I guess people are put off by the b&w colorite.

I think Karas is dead, and that conversation with (that girl, forgot her name) is his imagination.

reply

Either that or they were just speaking on his radio.

If Little Red Riding Hood shows up with a bazooka an a bad attitude I expect you to chin the bitch

I liked the b&w, but was put off by the badly done mo-cap, the uninspired cel-shading, the unimaginative plot and the boring pacing.

The b&w was the highlight, if you ask me. This would've been worthless in colour.

reply

I think they purposely leave it open to interpretation.

What is WITH Daniel Craig and these type of endings? LOL.

Probably--it is a film noir, afterall. Should it have a happy-ish ending? I think not.

This is an interesting subject, but what clues are there to him actually dying?

The wound did not seem deadly, and I am sure someone would have picked him up from his team after passing out.

He was shown, giving an explanation to Bislane, although it seemed rather dreamy.

However, given the film was shot, primarily from his point of view from the very beginning, after the explanation, the film should have ended, i.e. him dying. However at the very end there was a panning out shot with the cosmetic company billboard featured etc. I would take this final look at the city at the end of the film to suggest he was in fact still alive. I'm not saying it is strictly his p.o.v. at this point, but his consciousness is still alive.

Is there anything that actually suggests otherwise?

I thought he dies due to the sequence in which things were shown. THey show him collapsed against a wall, then dreamily telling Bislane that "she could be proud of her little sister" and then, from what i recall, panned back to him in the tunnel. So I thought the convo was in his head and he just sort of gave up as he'd done "all he could".

This makes the most sense. I think if you also add in the visual cue of there being a white background, where the film if almost entirely black, we can safely say that his death is heavily implied.

Like already stated, he collapsed, then fainted, then had this dream talk with the woman he loves because he felt he betrayed her by not "saving" her. Then reality begins again as the camera pans out to the city as it is at that moment.

Which again makes the most sense.

Else no reason to go back to the tunnel and pan out to the rainy city.

the ending is perfect ... although i thought karas would live but he did what he had to do ... i agree with "smenick-1" . the last words of karas draws the conclusion of the story ..the visuals also suggest that. the story ends but as we see claus out in the street .... the secret lives . an excellent work......
