Caine's accent

Sorry, I'm so used to his cockney accent. So much that I initially thought that his attempt of an American accent was terrible. But maybe I am wrong. Was it as terrible as I thought?

reply

You're correct.

That's what I love about these high school girls, man. I get older, they stay the same age.

reply

I also thought it was bad, but im not american im australian, with family in england so im aware of caines natural accent.

Im not sure if it was good or not, but in some parts sounded really lame like when he said "thats quite an american accomplishment" in the car listeing to 'like a rock' i actually laughed when he said that, it was so corny and put on.

reply

Oh it was fooking abominable. He's a great actor, but please God, they must never let him try an accent other than his own ever again.

he sounded very robotic...i could tell he was having trouble trying to keep it up

Still, Caine is a fine actor

reply

His accent in Secondhand Lions was quite good though. strange.

yeah its bloody terrible, im sure an american auditioned for the film. i have no problem with them hiring cain but he IS the cockney accent and everything it embodies....seems quite strange to me thats all.

reply

I keep seeing people complain about Caine's "American accent", but I don't think he was trying to talk with an American accent. Sounded British to me, although not cockney. I just assumed his character was originally from Britain. In fact, in the Bob Seger scene with Cage and Caine in the car, Caine says "quite an American accomplishment" in regard to his son mentioning the million+ salary he will be making in NY. Certainly sounds like his character wasn't originally an American... why else would he say it like that? JMO.

reply

He did do an American accent. Although I would be willing to believe that the character was originally from somewhere else, and all the time spent in America gave him a nudge of a local accent.

It's especially noticeable right in the beginning when he says "You bought a coffee".

I think the accent wasn't terrible per se, but because everybody is used to his normal accent, it sounds weird and misplaced. Much like I bet Alan Rickman could do a high-pitched voice if he wanted to, but doesn't, because his voice is so deeply connected to him.

reply

I doubt he was from somewhere else, as "Jimmy Carter said he was a national treasure." And Caine's accent was awful.

reply

I could hear a lot of British in his attempt of an American accent, Michael Caine isn't that good just like Liam Neeson trying to do an American accent.

reply

Caine is from Southwark and therefore is not a bleeding Cockney. Nobody south of the river is a cockney.

reply

I still stand by my belief that Michael Caine is an excellent actor but his accent in this film was pretty bad! Maybe its because I'm used to his almost unique voice, therefore whenever he attempts to change it, it just fails....I think the same could be said about someone like Patrick Stewart (though i dont recall him trying to do an american accent)

'cockneys' have spread far and wide since the war; but it's true he's no traditional cockney. The London accent (and estuary one) is always mistaken for being cockney. Anyway, it's always hard to listen when you know how iconic their voices are behind certain actors putting on an accent.

reply

The American English accent is flatter than the English or Australian accents. There is less contrast between consonants and vowels. It’s not so easy to maintain a flat American accent for a length of time by a non-native speaker. Michael Cain uses the same accent in The Weather Man that he used in Second Hand Lions, in which movie he was supposed to be an American. So I'm thinking what you are hearing is Cain's American accent. However, even though it isn't the best American accent I've ever heard from an English actor, it isn't the worse I've ever heard either.
