Steve Martin is a remarkably good actor

Though I didn't feel like this in the beginning, I've really grown to appreciate Martin's talents over the years. I thought he nailed every scene in the Pink Panther perfectly and for me was the reason why this movie was not bad but actually very good. I wish the Oscars would show their appreciation more to actors in comedies because Martin is tremendous.

i agree that steve martin is a very fine and accomplished actor of many decades, withoiut a doubt one of the funniest men alive, my only thing , stumbling point is an american in a frenchman's role,, i admire him for putting forth his best effort , but i believe he should have reversed the role with the policeman character,, and let him play closeau

are you going to bark all day little doggie,, or are you going to bite

reply

Agreed. Steve Martin is one of my all time favourites, everything he does I love!!

wow you three should join the steve martin is a god (but actually an idiot) club. if that was one of his best efforts then im afraid he is a poor actor indeed. not poor, terrible. i used to love martin too, but apparently this "great" actor can't even do a french accent.. nor can kline.. how pathetic. and bringing in martins sidekick only helped ruin this movie by showing how bad kline and martins accent's were

well, you obviously listen to billy talent so who are you to judge anything? i've never heard a more annoying singer in all my life. anyways...
why can't people understand that the french accents are supposed to be humorous? at least that's what i thought....that's what makes the scene where he's trying perfect his accent is so funny. an american playing a frenchman trying to speak american and failing miserably at it. it's subtly brilliant comedy, considering his french accent is so bad as it is. almost like it's a play on how bad his french accent is in the film. but that's okay...you don't have to enjoy it for me to enjoy it.

all i'm saying is...if you're going to attack others for enjoying something, i'm going to attack you for being harshly critical. there are many types of humor...and you clearly aren't a fan of them all.

These are my opinions.

Kile would've been MUCH better, as Closeau. Look @ him in 'French Kiss'. He would've been closer to Sellers' subtle work in the first 2 films.

Steve, who has worn toupees, for decades, couldn't even be bothered to wear a black one (like Sellers himself did), to look like the character.

Steve's worn dark toupees, before--in 'Pennies from Heaven', 'Leap of Faith' & 'Little Shop of Horrors'. No reason he couldn't here.

Honestly, though, I think the main prob with this film, is that Blake Edwards wasn't involved. He, more than Sellers, was responsible for Closeau.

Shawn Levy lacks the sophistication of Edwards. See: the remake of 'Cheaper by the Dozen' & the 'Night at the Museum' films.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say you really know nothing of Steve Martin's career or his skill set. He's a damn funny comedian, an excellent writer, and a pretty good musician. A great many actors/actresses would kill for his resume, nominations, and awards. Is he the greatest actor ever? Of course not, far from it. He's had his fair share of missteps throughout his career but on the whole he is exceptional.

Yes, he has genuine skill, talent and expression and 'becoming' ability that's deeply entrenched in his soul.

However, in this movie, he comes off as untalented, unskilled, unfunny fan who knows nothing about comedy or how to be funny as Steve Martin, it's like some soulless clone, robotoid or lookalike masquerading as Steve.

This movie is horrible in all possible levels, I ESPECIALLY hate when they do the hollyweird-typical "let's completely change the rhythm of this song to fit the more popular 4/4 system"-crap, that the 'Impossible Mission' theme also suffers from so much.

Look, if a song is not MADE for 4/4, don't CRAM and SQUEEZE it into 4/4! Not all songs have to FIT that musical junk-food-system for the masses, god damnit.

They do this so they can make it sound 'energetic and fast', with pumping drums that just HAVE to ruin every god damn song on the planet, because there's no good song that can exist without some douche making a 'remix' version with stupidly moronic apebeat to it, and if the song's structure, integrity or rhythm has to suffer, who cares, as long as the ""musician"" (I have to use DOUBLE quotes for this word) gets to be famous and is PAID.

So what, if Mancini or Mozard would rather have had the music have its own personality and meaning to how everything works together - just rescale it to 4/4, pump it with the most boring drumbeat ever, and release it as something ingenious, the world will lap it up.

Sadly, this is exactly what the world does.. there are even people PRAISING this turd movie on these discussion boards, if you can believe that.

Steve Martin is one of those comedy geniuses that can 'become' something else. It's not really even 'acting' per se, there's no method to it, just natural 'becoming'. Peter Sellers also had this talent, but it was expressed in a different way.

In this movie, he doesn't use this talent at all when on camera. He doesn't become anything, he just goes through the motions while trying hard to make a funny voice and accent, and fails even at that.

In this movie, he looks, sounds and seems like just another talentless hack that thinks he's funny, while everyone else sees he's not.
