Using a pillow as a handgun silencer.

Since this in hundreds of movies and shows, Bad guy slips in a bedroom to do a hit, and uses a pillow over the target's head to use as an adhoc silencer. Does it work with strictly low caliber handgun (such as a .22LR pistol), does it work if using a robust handgun such as 9mm or .40 caliber?

Technically there is no such thing as a silencer.

Also, the pillow is mostly about not getting splashed with blood. Not silencing.

I'm sure the report of a gunshot will draw unwanted attention. If assassins didnt want to get splattered with blood why not just fire from across the room?

I doubt it would work but the next time I go to the range I will try to remember to bring a pillow. I did try a plastic soda bottle filled with different stuff (cotton steel wool) but it failed

It wouldn't work with a revolver because part of the explosion blasts out through the cylinder gap, not just from the muzzle like a semi-auto pistol. For it to have a chance of working you'd have to encase the whole gun and your hand in the pillow.
