What is the matter with you people? 6.9/10????

How on earth could this film have only 6.9 out of 10? It may not be the best Australian film ever made, but it's darn good. It's great to see Cate Blanchett in a non-blockbuster film with her real accent, and it's great to see Martin Henderson not playing an American for once.

I found this film really sad, with brilliant acting and an amazing soundtrack. I'm not from Australia and I had never heard "Flame Trees" before and it's a great song, especially sung by the children's choir. I think it really says a lot about how one moves on with your life.

So, after all that.....what's with the 6.9 you fools?

While i wouldn't claim that this was a masterpiece, it was certainly better than 6.5! I guess it wasn't mainstream enough for some people.

I never caught this film until today. I've always said I've never seen a bad movie with Cate Blanchett in it. Until today.

Aussie films have traditionally been cringe-worthy, mostly playing like an episode of "Neighbours" (A driveling, sappy, airhead soap drama, shown in prime-time, no less (for those who don't know)). While this isn't quite that bad, it still made me wince quite a few times.

Even without the obvious camcorder feel to it, it still would have come across as amateurish and disjointed. Comparing it to something like "Requiem for a Dream" is ludicrous.

The only reason I watched this is because Cate is in it. And Sam Neill. But neither of them could save it. Ditto for Hugo.

It wasn't even nearly as good as "Candy". My main issue with that film is that they neglected to make an ending for it. It just sort of stopped.

So, 6.5 as it is at present is way too high. Somewhere around 5 or 4.5 would be about right. Fortunately, we have Uwe Boll to show us how to make a "1" film, so we have a yardstick.

The end of the film usually ties up the main plot. There is some conflict that is resolved. This movie is just about people living somewhat normal lives. Nobody is dealing with anything all that extraordinary, thus no satisfying ending is possible.

Personally I kept waiting for something to happen, some event that would center the film around a central theme, something that could be resolved, but it just never happens. Too bad really, all the pieces were there. A lot of time and energy went into creating believable characters and a nice cohesive setting, but nothing happens for two hours, and then it ends.

well, life goes on until you DIE, would that be a "satisfying ending" for you ??

guess you were too bored to notice what Lionel left at Tracey's house was his will.

so (we can assume) she *does* get a boost that will help her with her venture.

and the fact that the trio would probably try to avoid dealing-drugs from now on, they certainly can't do business with Steven anymore.

PLUS, now that Lionel has left, he's no longer a "burden" for Tracey.

GEEZ!!

how many more "endings" did you miss ??!!

He was going for the Tim-Tams

"Only" a 6.9? Are you kidding? This movie does not even deserve a 6 in my book. Its story, pacing, and characters are unbearably boring, slow, and uninteresting, as the movie itself. The only good aspect of this movie is the cast.

Boycott movies that involve real animal violence! (and their directors too)

I completely agree with you Mezaco. Best film I have seen for ages, Australian or otherwise. Thanks for starting this thread.
