Before Sunset or Before Sunrise?

Which one did you like better, and why?

reply

Before Sunset. Before Sunrise the movie had some parts where it got boring, while Before Sunset didn't stall.

Q: Before Sunset or Before Sunrise?
A: yes

Om Mani Padme Hum

Before Sunrise was better.

Sunset's acting and script was a step down, even if the circumstances were more natural. The first half of Sunset was pretty underwhelming - though the second half had some great moments. I felt the random cursing and Jesse's randomly contrived sex-obsession (which wasn't evident in the 1st) took away from Sunset at times as well.

Sunrise's chemistry was much more genuine. Sunset had a few lines (by both Hawke and Delpy) which felt read, rather than naturally conveyed.

Very nice thread with nice comments. I have quite a few thing that come to mind but I think it could end up becoming quite a long post so I'm not going to go into it right now, but maybe I'll be back at a later time. Just a bit too tired right now.
I did enjoy reading the comments though.

Before Sunrise was so good, it was full of city sights, romance and hope. It was an original, moving, inspiring movie and I'm glad I watched it. 9/10
Before Sunset on the contrary was of very limited scenes, with a good dialouge and bond between the actors, but it was just a sequel for those who were desperate to find out what had happened to them and I didn't even notice when it ended. I was seriously thinking where's the rest of the movie when it occured to me that a whole hour with something had passed by and I didn't even notice. Hence the rating 8/10

My vote is with Before Sunset.
Why because as a poster mentioned above, I really liked the idea of a 'happy ending' of sorts. I really believe they ended up together and the 2nd film was a lot easier to digest than the first, the first one felt like an 'emotional toil' of sorts can't really put it well into words.
Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed both of them bad without the first the second would have been nothing while the first can just stand on its own.

Before Sunrise established two characters and their relationship so well that I didn't want the film to end and I wanted to see more of this couple just interacting and talking to each other...

...and Before Sunset did that times 10. It was the perfect follow-up for these two characters and what they would have done if they found each other again years later. The conversations were more mature, the relationship was more than a simple love story, it was just all more than I could have reasonably expected. Is it better? Does it stand alone as its own film? In my opinion, yes. There is enough information about the two characters and what happened to them prior to not be lost or confused if this was the first one you saw and it's pretty easy to see how they work so well as an on-screen couple. For all of the reasons I've said, I personally prefer Before Sunset.

In a way you can't have one without the other.

Before Sunrise informs everything about Before Sunset. Without it, I don't think Before Sunset would have the same poignancy and resonance.

Personally, I prefer Before Sunset as a film and story. The characters maturity and their relationship feels so much more real and touching for reasons I am unable to fully explain.

But I suspect the explanation for why I prefer Before Sunset is deeply connected to its prologue chapter, Before Sunrise.

The two films inform and depend on one another for meaning and it's why they are both so amazing and endlessly rewatchable.

I'd just like to add that Before Sunset is my favourite movie sequel of all time and it also includes one of my most loved ending scenes.

Can't wait for Before Midnight. To hell with all the other blockbuster sequels and remakes coming out this year... Jesse and Celine's next chapter is the only one I shall be watching on the big screen.

I bet you now have a new favorite trilogy.
