Pretty Persuasion vs. Election?

Alot of people have compared these to films, I didn't really see why. I can see that Tracy Flick and Kimberly Joyce are similar people, but the films aren't really, yes they have a few similarities but I don't really see why they are compared, anyone agree?

Election was as good as Pretty Persuasion was bad.

When this was first released, I remember someone comparing it to Cruel Intenions. Saying it was like a better/darker version of that movie.

Evan Rachel Wood and James Woods' performances are great in this.
