Nobody wore seatbelts in 1965

Just saying.

reply

Not sure about the USA but in Australia they were an option from at least 1960 onwards. Possibility earlier. But they were lap belts till 1966.

reply

I never claimed cars weren't equipped with them. But that nobody wore them.

reply

Nobody? Not one person?

First of all, let me get this out of the way. I know I'm late to the table.... So many movies, so little time. I Just watched this for the first time last weekend.
I thought the very same thing. We never wore seat belts in the 60's. I don't recall anyone doing that. Most seat belts were shoved into the crack of the seat so that you could sit comfortably.
We only started wearing them in the 80's when the law said we had to.
I am all for wearing them. We should have known then, what we know now.
In any case, I was mildly amused and surprised that the folks were wearing them in this movie.

reply

I agree. No one in my family ever wore seat belts in the 60's or the 70's and neither did I. I'm sure there were exceptions and that some folks did, but I never knew anyone to do so. The whole reason it became the law in the 80's is because too many people were dying in crashes because not enough people wore the belts.

reply

It's strange. We were never really shown back then that if you are going 50, 60 miles an hour that you are going to fly just as fast in a crash!

Back to the movie though..... The mother struck me to be the type of woman who wouldn't dream of wrinkling her clothes by wearing a seat belt. LOL! I knew many ladies who felt that way even when it became mandatory to wear them.

reply

I agree, she did seem that type :-)

reply

Bs. You ever had a cop for a dad?

People wore them. Your statement is ridiculous.

reply

Are you 16 yrs old?

reply

I would bet even by 1980, 90% of US drivers did NOT wear a seat belt, ever.

reply

Never wore them in the 80s either I think late 80s is when we started to wear them as a rule in our family but..
geeze
in the 70s, we bounced all around the car, stood up holding onto the drivers eat, laid in the back window...crazy thinking f that now.

I can't hear you over the volume of my hair.

reply

I still don't wear them, F the cops

Some of us did. And some paid to have them installed even before they were added by the manufacturers.
