I agree that there was much room for improvement, but I liked it fairly well. It was worth it for the short interviews with the stars of the films, but I wished they had been longer.
And it seemed liked the website, TORN, that had a lot to do with this film, kind of went out of their way to find the most offbeat fans of Tolkien or the films to interview or be in their "confessional." With most Trek documentaries, you have people from all walks of life and professions telling of their love for the material. Here, you have the same love, but the filmmakers either didn't bother to show a good cross-section of fans, or seemingly simply wanted to show the "eccentric" ones. Which is strange, because TORN was very closely associated with news about the film, and, I thought, passionate about the fans.
On the plus side, when they showed the actors at the conventions, they really appeared fan-friendly and accessible.
The tourist site of Hobbiton, USA was kind of neat. I had never seen that.
The African-American lady that was the fan most interviewed throughout, was for me more representative of the positive aspects of fandom and what they took from Tolkien's books.
The guy from Motorhead may have seemed a bit off, but I liked his comments about the books being about people actually caring about each other as opposed to the real world was something he loved about The Lord of the Rings.
Liked seeing the tours of New Zealand where they filmed the movies.
I had never seen the original Ace covers before, so that was a treat for me, even if they were incorrect in spots.
And I loved seeing the Ballantine covers that had the emus, as I actually read those!
Cool to see Andy Serkis invading the confessional. On the extras, Sala Baker invades another confessional.
Dominic Monaghan did a good job narrating.
Liked hearing from David Carradine, and especially Geddy Lee telling of reading the book to his daughter.
All-in-all, not bad but could have been much better.
