Johnathan Demme

I think you could tell that Demme isn't a documentary filmmaker from the reviews I've read so far , but I'm very interested to see this

What does that mean? If you mean that negatively, that he doesn't know how to properly make a documentary, I think that's a little bit silly - he has made some great (although not very well known, other than Stop Making Sense) docs. But if you mean that he has a different take on the documentary form, I actually agree, in that Demme brings a truly cinematic and visual sensibility to the political documentary genre, which has lately been dominated by talking head agit-prop. This film displays a playfulness and a musical rhythm that is characteristic of Haitian film and culture as well...Great film.

This is one of Demme's best films. I actually love his documentaries as much as his fictional films.
