So you knew the whole time

I may have missed something here, but I watched the film last night and there seems to be a problem with the scene where Willem Dafoe tells Ray Liotta that he's been taken a placebo.
I may have misheard, but I'm sure Ray Liotta asked if he knew all along, Willem Dafoe says "No, I only found out tonight" but then Ray still responds angrily "so you knew the whole time!"
Surely this can't be right?
(obviously the quotes may not be word for word)

01:31:57,360 --> 01:31:59,479 You knew this the whole time?
01:31:59,480 --> 01:32:01,879 It would've affected how I treated you.
01:32:01,880 --> 01:32:03,639 I just found out tonight, I swear.
01:32:03,640 --> 01:32:05,839 You knew theses things weren't real?
01:32:05,840 --> 01:32:08,340 They were real to you, and that's what matters.

ok i watched this last night and i think you are right, right ill pop the dvd in and check........
ok defoe tells him that he was in a control group being fed placebos,
finishing with "i never lied to you and im not lying to you now"
then Liotta says "you knew this the whole time?"
defoe "no it would have affected how i treated you,i swear"

then liotta DOES say "So you knew the whole time that these things weren't real"

so that is weird,Defoe just told him he was only told tonight but liotta asks the same question again,

weird one there,must be an editing mistake

well spotted

Not really, he just didn't believe that they were fake. Heck even I do that in real life, when someone tells me something that is unbelievable I ask again just to make sure they understood me. "You mean you lost my wallet!?" "So you lost my money!?" for example :P

reply

I noticed that too! I said it to my hubby during that scene that it made no sense!

reply

yeah, i was caught off guard with that one

reply

Phew as long as it wasn't jus me!! Enjoyable film though. Good performances all round I found.

Nice to know I wasn't dreaming about that one... I knew it! I just thought the subtitles translated wrong at first - lol :p

Liotta simply didn't understand the doctor, or was checking

reply

"so you knew the whole time!" - refers to the fact that Willem Dafoe's character knew all along that some characters were given placebos. At least, that's what I believe.

-Goodnight, mother of six!
-Goodnight, father of two!

Poor editing...

I think you are misinterpreting the dialogue.

Dafoe knew placebos were being used, but he didn't know which subjects got them.

"I only found out tonight" refers to Dafoe knowing LIOTTA got the placebo.

"so you knew the whole time" refers to the fact Dafoe knew placeos were being used.

reply

I think that's probably right, since Rea said something earlier like, "You knew there was a 50% chance he was in the control group."

But I admit when I heard Liotta say it during the movie I thought it didn't make sense, and I chalked it up to an editing error. I'm glad you made me re-think it.

reply

I don't know if this was bad writing or bad editing but it works well in a laughably bad film.
