Any reason for the nudity?

I'm not a prude at all but in the film the night before the dive the female character is lying on the bed fully naked. From watching the scene I could not see any reason for this? Or is it just me?

I was thingking EXACTLY the same thing. Much as I liked the scene - there was NO NEED for nudity. The film had nothing to do with sex, flirting or anything of that nature. I was totally suprised when it happened and could see no reason for its creation let alone its inclusion

I watched that scene again in the extras with the commentary on it and the actress was slightly embarrassed - I was hoping to hear why it was there in the first place but it was merely laughed off by her and other memebers of the cast.

I did enjoy seeing her naked - I must admitt - but it fairness it was completely and totally UNNECESSARY

I said out loud to my partner "Oh ridiculous! What need is there!? It's just a pointless tit show!"

However...after watching this film I came to the conclusion that the nudity wouldn't have been merely shoved in to cater for the randy roving eye - it simply isn't in keeping with the film’s simple but effective style/purpose etc. If cheap thrills were the name of the game, this movie could have had a sex scene or much more gory, sensational horror moments to jazz it up.

I believe the nude scene (just like the grainy 'home-movie' camera work) is just to give a 'fly on the wall' documentary view; I mean, she's not exactly splayed out, pouting in a seductive pose is she?! WE, the viewers are invited into a 'behind the scenes', loving-couple holiday environment where they sleep nude (it IS hot) with smears of after-sun lotion on their average faces and she lays in bed reading with rather larger than normal areolae on bog standard breasts! (Not worth rewinding, though they're nice enough). The following scene when he's leaping about with a rolled up magazine on a mosquito hunt is classic normality for me (except my man would be starkers, with one hand over any moving parts!) so this shows they're just like any normal, everyday folk.

I despise meaningless nudity on tv; it makes you feel either sick with envy, sick with lust or just sick. As to the whole ‘sleeping in the buff vs clothing’ debate on this hilarious thread, I’d say it’s about 50/50 over here in England; I'm no exhibitionist or nudist but I sleep naked and think it's normal - but I'm not gonna to go after anyone with a pitchfork if they prefer wearing pyjamas!

Nothing wrong with nudity. Nudity is natural. Nudity is nice (mostly). Nudity is foxy.

Was the nude woman necessary? No. But was it so hard to watch?

reply

I never sleep naked, and besides, women should always wear a bra to bed or their boobs will sag prematurely.

Honestly, I think they were just trying to depict couples in a naturalistic sense. I didn't realize there were so many people who DIDN'T lounge around their hotel rooms like that sometimes. I do it all the time and I am hardly what you'd consider a nudist, hell I don't even like taking my shirt off when I go swimming lol

The whole interplay in that scene is very real and true to life for me. You're laying around naked and comfortable, your partner comes in for an innocent cuddle, someone starts to get excited, the other person makes a few faces and then the partner realizes (because they know each other as well as they do) that they aren't really into it. Someone says "I'm sorry I'm just tired" and the other person smiles, says no big deal, and you fall asleep together. I find it very sweet and true.

The only thing I wear in bed is a smile. (But then I'm not a puritanical american).

To be honest, I think the nudity was added just as a hook to get people to watch. I have many friends who would immediately be interested in watching this movie just because I mention that it has a fully nude scene in it. They wouldn't even care about the movie truly, just that it's a "horror" movie and it has full nudity is reason enough to watch, or at least watch the beginning. They do the same trick in television shows, you ever notice how with some series they always put all of the sex and nudity in the season premier and first few episodes, and then you don't see anymore of it for the rest of the season? They know that most people are addicted to anything sexual, so it's a great way to get people to watch, even if they only watch a little bit.

The nudity was the only good part of this movie.

The whole film is about a couple with a troubled marriage and the lengths that it takes for them to reconnect once again. When the film opens, they are both on their cell phones, detached from each other. He says, "This is supposed to be a vacation." They are hoping that this vacation will reunite them.

Once on vacation, they are bored and boring. Bored with life outside their normal busy world, and bored with each other. This is emphasized in the nudity. When he broaches sex, she stops him. He says, "So, how are you?" "Fine," she replies. It's static = death for the couple, and they don't even realize it.

What could be a better way to reconnect with your spouse on vacation then sex? Yet for them, it's not as appetizing as small talk.

Once they are begin attacked by the sharks, they start to argue in the middle of the ocean. He laments the lost opportunity of having sex the night before. It is in this argument that the true despair of their situation is reviled. This movie is visual about sharks, but the torture between this couple is the cause for their raw emotional pain.

That's the reason for the nudity.

I hear you Parkerkerry...It's natural for us to be attracted to nude images of the sex we prefer, but 1. That's not what this film is about and 2. If they're hanging around nude which is understandable, why do the men so often get to scamper under the covers or show up with boxers on or something then? These b.s. double standards just cheapen a piece, which they especially can't afford to do in a mediocre film like this.
