Alot of ppl i know heard of it from, yes you guessed it, Borat. But i heard of it from SyphonFilter :D

So when did you first hear of it?

reply

To be honest, When I was about 13 or 14 in 8th grade. Right after september 11th, they wouldn't stop talking about Afghanistan, so they talked about all of it's neighbors, Kazakhstan being one.

reply

Afganistan is a middle eastern country.

Kazakhstan is a central asian country. It is further north separated by some other 'stans such as Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.

Although they are both Muslim countries, their cultures differ greatly and really have no relationship to Afganistan.

reply

Kazakhstan is wonderful country. I been there and I have expected Kazakhstan to be poor developing country. However they made big step. People are not bad.
They have no reltion with middle east.they are absolutely diffrent.

Actually, you are wrong, Afghanistan is a South-Central Asian country, just above Pakistan (and the Indian subcontinent, which is South Asia). The Middle-East ends at Iran (who are Indo-European, like Europe, Indian, Afghanistan, Pakistan etc). The Bush administration used the term ''Greater Middle-East'' to refer to most of the Near-East, but it is not accepted by geographer and was based on ignorance.

''Although they are both Muslim countries, their cultures differ greatly and really have no relationship to Afganistan.''

You are right they are different cultures. But they do have a connection. The Altaic linguistic group (which includes the language of the Kazakhs) is related to Indo-European (which includes the language of the Afghans and the Iranians) via Eurasiatic. Both Afghans and Kazakhs are very inspired by Iran too, and ''-stan'' is from the Iranian language. ;-)

You guys MUST be Americans

There is a beautiful world out there, try not to exploit it and kill its people, and perhaps you can benefit too.

I heard about Kazakstan in 1996, when I went there on a school exchange. It is nothing like the movie Borat portrays it. It's a very beutiful country that is rich in culture and people. One of these I hope to make it back and look up the family that open their home to me.

reply

I'm sure it is. It's one of the reasons I chose not to watch Borat.
My great grandmother is part Kazakh, so I've known about it for well, as long as I can remember. :)

reply

Why does that stop you from watching Borat? He chose Kazakhstan because not many people have heard of it, not to make fun of the country itself. He also makes fun of other things like Jews, feminists, and stereotypical Americans in the movie. He's Jewish; people can't get offended so easy.
