actually this is a mediocre movie

First of all. I am a Chinese and understand both Chinese Mandarin and Cantonese.

Let me tell you folks here. Most Chinese people will give this movie a bad score. at most mediocre, like 6 out of 10. Most if not all of my chinese friends (some from HK and some from mainland) will think this moive is a huge let down. Not comparable to some earlier Chow's movies in 90s.

I am surprised to find out that this movie is actually well received in foreign region. maybe it's due to cultural difference.

Another movie actually very bad is also well received is "Red Cliff". Most Chinese ppl will give it a 3/10 score. I noticed some fans in US call Red Cliff epic and compare it to LOTR. actually the dialogues is very cheesy and so modern-feel.

anyway, just to point out. i am glad knowing you people like hong kong or chinese movie

Please, O superior person: tell us what to like?

For modern martial arts and kungfu movie.

This is the best movie ever, period.

Just saw it again on HBO. And it's still not getting old.

So i came here right away to rate it (can't believe haven't done so already)
9.
It would've been a 10, but it lack a SEQUEL!!
(or maybe I should give it a 10 because there is no sequel....?)

reply

How does a lack of a sequel diminish the original? That would be like giving the first Matrix a low score because the sequels were let downs. They take nothing away from the original, just as there not being a second one effects the original film here in no way whatsoever. What you rate something, you are rating it on the experience from the moment you hit play until those end credits roll.

i understand what you say. in my opinion Asian movies needs more intellectual to be appreciated, this one is... well, plain simple.

that's why a lot of Asians masterpieces are not even rated / seen by them =)

As a Chinese, I'm so ashamed by LZ's opinion. Kungfu Hustle is literally the best film of Stephen Chow and Best Kungfu Film of China excepts those from Bruce Lee. What gives you the right to represent all Chinese people? How dare you say this kind of crap on IMDB? Many Chow's films are not accepted at first but they prove to be masterpieces in five to ten years. This is one of them. Now Kungfu Hustle is probably the most broadcasted movie in whole China. And this is just a slap in your stupid face that Chinese people don't like it.

Also to those Americans who say that Kungfu Hustle is just pure entertainment, Kungfu Hustle contains a lot of things maybe you didn't see before. In one Stephen Chow's interview he said that Kungfu Hustle is about "I learn how to fight, then I don't have to. To learn how to fight is ultimately to avoid this kind of violence." It is about "If I don't suffer for all people , who will?" Kungfu Hustle is about love, courage, and forgiveness to those bad people in the world. It is about an attitude of saving the world from evil as an ordinary little person who can barely feed himself. It is about the power of love that saves one person, even the world.

Kungfu Hustle is a good film of Kungfu Philosophy, it is about spirit of inside rather than Kungfu of outside.

If this is such a "let down" what movies do you suggest then? It's fine if you don't like the movie, that's kind of how film works. Some people like some movies and others don't. Nothing anyone can say or do will change your mind on that.

This is one of the best ever Chinese movie I ever seen and I have seen it more than 10 times. I never feel bored to see it. I am desperately waiting for its sequel and I wish Stephen makes it soon.
