When did it become public knowledge that Tony Stark WAS Iron Man?

Did it begin with this movie? Before this, really the Fantastic Four were seen as the most note-worthy examples of superheroes in the Marvel universe whose "real identities" (meaning that they didn't wear masks) were known to the general public.

I was aware that for the longest time, Tony Stark used the cover that Iron Man was his bodyguard. This is already pretty problematic since Iron Man was hardly ever seen with the person whom he is supposed to protect.
