One miscast threw the entire movie

Had another actor other than Sam Rockwell had been cast as Zaphod, this'd be a much better movie. All other actors/actresses did a superb job, but Sam made it weird and hokey.

I was a big fan of Mos Def's music and even think he's done a decent job in some other films, but I would say giving him this role was some of the worst casting I've ever seen. I honestly have no idea what they were thinking.

reply

They were not thinking IMO.

I'm not saying I was overly happy with the rest of the casting - Arthur should've been taller and more handsome/less clownish, Zaphod was way too hysterical and the long blond hair was wtf, but Ford...omg. Nothing in common with the character from the book. What a shame.

You realise that Zaphod is supposed to be weird, right?

reply

We all realize it and would've welcomed it had it been executed in the book's humor style manner, alright.
The point is Rockwell's Zaphod was way too out of tune with the book's character and way too hysterical/clownish. Not even close to the Britain style humor filled char in the book.

Now, do YOU realize THAT?

Actually Zaphod's just this guy .. you know..! :D

reply

Nonsense. Sam Rockwell is the best oart about this movie.

Aside from Alan Rickman, this was the name I expected to see the least.

sam was perfect. it was mos def that killed the film. i wish they could replace him digitally with richard ayoade.

reply

How could Mos Def have possibly managed to kill the movie, he hardly ever was on screen.

"he hardly ever was on screen"

you keep repeating that, but it isn't true.

ford and arthur had the most screen time. not only was mos def annoying in itself, but it also destroyed the important dynamic between both "main characters". i like him in general, but as for this film he was my jar jar bings. every second felt like having teeth removed.

Zooey Deschanel for me, although having a very pretty face, just not a good actress

so many movies, so little time

reply

You are horribly wrong. Sam was by far and away the best cast character. What an actor! It is inspiring to to see an actor take a character to such great heights. I find it disturbing and a realization at how stupid people are when they make such bizarrely idiotic comments like the OP.

reply

I haven't read the books so I can't comment on Sam Rockwell's performance based on the character in the books, but I thoroughly enjoyed his portrayal of Zephod. As to being weird, I think that was the kind of the point. The whole movie is weird (in a good way). In my opinion, it was this role that drew more attention to him as a character actor, and led to bigger movies for him. I think the only miscast was Zooey Deschanel. I don't necessarily dislike her, I didn't hate her performance, and I get why they chose her since she's quirky, but I just didn't feel any connection, from her side, with the rest of the cast. As to the movie not living up to the books as many people have pointed out, very, very few movies do. It's only natural to make comparisons but I usually try (and sometimes fail), to view them as separate entities, and judge them on their own merits, or lack there of. Otherwise, I'd probably never like any movie or TV show based on a book, and I really like to read, but I also really enjoy movies and TV. To clarify, I'm not saying everyone should, just saying what I do. Or try to.

There are not many books one should have read, but this is one of them.

Agreed, this and Gibsons Sprawl trilogy ..

reply

I agree Sam Rockwell was not right and Zaphod IMHO .. Mark Wing-Davey was superb as Zaphod and should have been the benchmark used for casting.

I also did not like Zooey Deschanel as Trillian..

BTW .. I think Sam Rockewll is a brilliant actor and think Zooey Deschanel is a very weak actress ...
