Oh my God! Smithers is gay!!

I’m a huge Simpsons fan and I don’t remember anyone getting upset about Smithers being gay, in fact his character is highly respected, both by the other characters in the show and the fans who watch it. So how come so many people are getting upset over the fact that Ren & Stimpy are gay? …or at least bi-sexual for Ren. I think these new shows are good. The homosexual attitude doesn’t bother me, just like in The Simpsons.

Having graphically depicted anal (or otherwise) sex in a cartoon popular with children is NOT a wise move.

Err, I don't think most kids knew who Ren and Stimpy were when the APC aired since the original show had been off the air for more than seven years. That and the show was on late at night, past bedtime hours.

reply

Kids'll still stay up to watch it because maybe their parents watched it. Also the sound of trampling over childhood memories can be heard.

Having said that "Altruists" (apart from the rather forced dirty gags, of which there were few) was very enjoyable.

The funny thing is, Onward and Upward, which depicted them as being gay lovers was written back in the early 90's when John K was still working on the original show. It was in response to fans who wanted a completely gross and disgusting episode of Ren and Stimpy.

The animation is always top notch, however.

I was born in 1992, and I remember seeing a few episodes of Ren and Stimpy in my early childhood (it never was really my favorite show.. I think my sister, who is 7 1/2 years older than me, may have watched it a bit). I was around 11 when APC aired, if I'm not mistaken, and because I was extremely sheltered (or at least, I was supposed to be..... long story..), I was offended by APC and disgusted that someone would use characters from a kids' show in such a vile way. Of course, at 11, I thought it was my job to tell everyone how to live their life (might have had something to do with 8 years in Christian schools.. who knows?), so I was all over this board calling the show and everyone that watched it "evil" and telling them they "will be punished". If you were around here at that time, you probably remember me. If so, I hope it's not too late to apologize.

To me, this specific complaint always seemed like it came from people who loved the original show when they were kids, but hadn't seen it since they became adults. Seriously, if you watch the early episodes from '91/'92...Ren and Stimpy were gay from day one. There were gay gags littered throughout a number of the episodes...it's just that kids generally didn't notice them. So I always thought it was weird that people complained about Ren and Stimpy "suddenly" being gay. The first time I heard someone say that, in reference to the new cartoon, my response was "But...wait...they've always been gay."

Now, that doesn't reflect one way or the other on the quality of the new series...but the whole "they turned Ren & Stimpy gay" argument is, in itself, pretty naive.

But whichever way you look at it, they didn't have Ren & Stimpy buggering each other in the original series. Sadly, nowadays, it's very fashionable too dig out old cartoons and have Z-list celebrities mouth of about how every character 'was so obviously gay/on drugs' etc.

It's not really the gay stuff that botheres me, it's the rather forced seeming unpleasant 'humour' of these newer ones. There's loads of good stuff, but the filthy stuff kind of spoils it, gay or otherwise.

Everyone knows Smithers is a closeted homosexual. Ren I also figured was bi, and Stimpy was maybe Asexual.
