Why is it rated so low?

Before any of you get a chance to comment I'll answer my own question:because Uwe Boll has generated a lot of hatred.

Sure, the plot, even if it had potential, is basically a stereotype.We could all thank the screenwriter for that, and for some really bad dialogue.The acting is mediocre at best(with Tara Reid taking it up a notch in the "I can't act, I'm just a pretty face" department).And the direction, well...the direction looks like it came from a 10-year old.It's like Uwe Boll keeps making his first movie ever, but it just so happens it's not with his own camera and friends as actors, it's a big budget production.I mean, he knows nothing of suspense, or effective editing and not to mention the horrible use of music throughout the movie.Though he might have some talent in the action scene department.

On the other hand I've seen so much worse editing, direction and well...movies, that this one's rating surprises me.I would expect it to be around 4-5, as I've seen more idiotic films rated higher.

Apparently Uwe Boll has angered so many people by presenting under-par adaptions of video games that people rate low just because it's a Boll movie, forgetting that there are worse directors out there.Perhaps it's the fact that he keeps making them(unlike others who flop with their movies), but he's not in any way the worst director out there, and this movie does not deserve to be in the Bottom #100.

As I've said, this isn't all bad, it's a good enough DVD for a lazy afternoon, but just as a one time rental.

PS:Wondering why good actors(and there's plenty of them), knowing Boll's reputation still sign on to do his projects.I'm sure not all of them do it just because of the paycheck.

I totally agree with your remarks. Watched this movie long before I knew anything about the director, and rated this as a solid B-movie, minus the ending. It almost seems like he ran out of material there...

EXACTLY what i felt. the action scenes were very interesting, the ZERGLINGS (lol) were very cool, and one of the slow-mo fights was bad-ass.

although Tara Reid makes everything *beep* if you ignore the ending to this movie (which made me go, wow i wasted my life), the movie was TOTALLY within C to B- range. (with the ending it's an F)

That's the thing though, you can't give a movie a "meh... it's okay" 5 rating if the ending is trash. I thought White Noise was pretty scary up until the end, and I gave that a 3 because the end destroyed it. I gave this film a 1, because even if the ending was decent, it's still not a meh film, it's a completely unmemorable film with Tara Reid playing an intelligent human being.

I like quite a few movies a lot but they have mediocre, sometimes terrible endings. Same with TV shows. I don't think that's a given by any means as long as you like many different genres

treu, I saw this before the hatred hype of Uwe Boll, and I think this movie aint that bad! Slater is good actor and the creature designs were pretty good aswell.

i watched this knowing the guys reputation, but not having seen another Boll film before. I was pleasantly surprised. It's just another run of the mill action/alien type hollywood movie. Nothing particularly bad about it though.

I like the underground scene.

Personally, i liked Tara Reid (couldn't remember who she was at the time of watching) in this - thought she gave it a bit of energy.

i can only assume fans of the games are rating it bad cos it doesn't live up to what they got out of the game (how many people that read books say the movies live up to them?), or movie buffs rate it bad because they don't like the idea of movies being based on games

I do not know the director and would not have an opinion on him, I rated the movie so low because it was so bad! it all just seemed so pointless and disjointed. The acting from Reid was wooden and stilted, i was just waiting for the classic 'take the glasses off and shake your hair out' moment. And there it was! Her make up was not very complimentary and the dialogue for all was appaling. For no apparent reason, Slater and Reid stood side by side shooting randomly in a sort of tunnel vision shot. it was so out of place it was weird. Reid appeared to suddenly become an expert in firearms without showing any aptitude before and Slater was stuck with a never emptying 6 shooter and ignored his machine gun.
It was only recently trumped as the most pathetic film i have seen by Incubus, also with Reid.
"Save le pom-pom girl, save the world."

want to know why? just play the game and you'll find out how the story of aitd really is. this looks like the relic or something like that. maybe if you shoot the same film but you keep the "alone in the dark world" away, i could give this film a 4 or 5 because its boring but not that bad.
but people, if u buy the rights for the aitd game, just make the film as the game is. and if you want to make this movie just call it "the other world" if u want to. but leave the game away...
now, im afraid this moron made the same stupid thing with farcry. i hope im wrong...

I like good movies and I apreciate these crap movies, because they shows what could go wrong.

Uwe Boll is one of the worst directors in the history of movies. The problem is, that he is doing all as he wants. Often he writes scripts, hes a director and many times he paid for the film, so its basicly ONLY his fault.

Some might say its ok, no one is forcing you to watch his films. However he is challenging critics who only try to warn other people. This is what's causing so much hatred. 30% its from his "talent" to ruin everything, 30% because hes still going on and trashing more and more movies and 40% because hes angry at people arguing with him about quality of his work.

Anyway Dungeon Siege tale is coming to theatres, so I found video store and borrowed this film... I made it only to Nightwish song, which is great.

And I have seen hilarious movies like Battlefield Earth or UltraViolet. And I managed to finish watching them. The same thing I cannot say about Uwe Bolls movies.

I had no idea who Uwe Boll was or what movies he had made before i watched Alone In The Dark.

I still thing it's the worst movie I've ever seen. Only one that comes close to being that bad is Surf Nazi's Most Die. :)

This was Boll getting to do a bigger budget movie but it's a kinda movie that really rand dry by the end. But I agree, this is nowhere the worst movie nor the worst videogame movie I've seen, that title undisputedly goes to "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation".
