Swades was easily the best film last year for me.
If you want a real insult, try the recently oscar-winning documentary, Born Into Brothels, about Kolkata's child prostitution. It talks as if the filmmakers are acting as saviours to these poor kids, and it completely sidelines the organisations and support groups which are tackling this issue. That I find insulting to India. It makes out these kids are drawn into prostitution and no one in India cares about it, which just isn't true.

Way to go man! Swades simply rocked..actually its even a serious Oscar contender..since the Academy looks for foreign lang movies which are culture-ethnic-society oriented. So actually Swades fits perfectly, perhaps more than BLACK.

I am not sure what sort of areas of this movie you didnt like. Now on the whole, I dont seem to enjoy Bollywood films - but this one DID NOT fill the classic triad of ...
1) completely inane and logicless
2) awesomely stupid and confusing dance+song scenes
3) random beatings of people and/or excessive violence against women (all of which justified for an idiotic cause)
SO in my mind it exceeded other films in its class; BUT like Lagaan (the same director) it is a fantastic film. GO ahead and read my review of it.

Swades is one of the best movies of recent times. Sans the romantic interest of Mohan Bhargav, rest everything is a classic. But i guess romance was also necessary. After what's a Indian movie without a love song :)
On the whole great movie. I vote 9/10
